Im a big fan of the Rubber Guard and Eddie Bravo's views on Jiu Jitsu in General. BUT you don't see it applied that often in an effective way during true MMA events.
That's why Im a huge fan Shinya Aoki!

I agree Tom, Shinya Aoki is pretty unstopable once he gets someone into his "Rubber Guard"?!

ERIC THANKS BRO AND GREAT POST!!!!
Even if you start a whole new Thread with that info it would be great. Id like to be able to search it in the future so I can find them all at once!

Little to none:
Its more use of your Hip Flexers if anything you are sore in your traps back and Hami from using your arms to complete the lockdown.
Now Knee Bars are a different story!@

Yes, if you don't stretch properly. I wasn't stretching correctly before practicing the rubber guard and after about 2 months, I was having bad knee problems. I've always been very flexible and was able to put a foot behind my head without stretching for years. Therefore, I thought my flexibility alone will allow me to execute the rubber guard effectively. I didn't calculate the importance of stretching the knees daily to avoid injury. Eddie's last book, Master The Rubber Guard, really illustrates wonderful stretches and talks about how proper stretching is often disregarded by jiujitsu practioners.
If you can move it, stretch it! Oxygen in the body is key!
Hope that helped!

Shinya "Tobikan Judan" Aoki is a perfect match between Judo and BJJ. He is a student of Yuki Nakai (The Japanese fighter that competed against Rickson Gracie in the finals of his documentary, Choke). He used to be a police officer in Japan.

IMHO STRETCHING is very important in using the Rubber Guard?! I would hate pulling something due to not and/or not enough stretching before attempting this form...

About the knees:
I stand corrected. It has never hurt my knees but it looks like it causes some strain. I've always felt the stretch elsewhere but I have been blessed with no knee injuries *knocks on wood!*:D

To be honest i never checked the links. The real reason i wanted to keep this thread alive is i wanted everyone to look at the date Tom posted this. Look how much 10th planet has blown up in that time. Look at the immediate posts afterward.
Old posts were such like:
"That looks like it could hurt my knees."
New post would probably read:
"Yeah working an asylum sweep off of a crooked triangle has proven worth the drilling from meat hook."
