POW Martial Arts in Chicago. He's Arlovski's BJJ coach and also the IFL'S RedBears BJJ coach. This is my 2nd school I've been to in the last couple of years for BJJ and by far the best in my opinion.

I have a few different teachers but Jared is the most credible and certified. I took Jits from a guy for 3 years that supposedly trained under Carlos Machado.

I had an interesting thought. As I will be moving soon, my lineage will change. How do you factor that stuff in, the moving to different schools and what not? As I have yet to attain my blue belt, would I not count my training now in that lineage?

As of now, my lineage is a 2 pronged lineage anyway(At least as it is displayed at the gym.)

10-13-2008, 02:54 PM
yeah but i think in america bjj is a little more expensive than in europe maybe, i read the expression "rich mans sport" here somewhere :) but i think all classes cost 90 $ per month at aris dojo, that isnt thaaaat expensive :) but for bravo, he is at a topclass location (legends gym) mh and he is the founder of very innovative system i think its expensive because he just can do it :)

BJJ classes usually range from $60/month to $299/month.

It depends on the LOCATION (city), other schools in the area (market competitiveness), and the NAME of the instructor.

Larger centers like LA can get more pricey but you've also got to factor in RENT and OVERHEAD in such areas. Higher prices are also an indication that the cost of running the school is higher.

I think Eddie's classes are $150 a month but don't quote me on that.

Not to thread jack, but does anyone else think that it is odd that Carlos Jr. got his Red / Black belt from Renzo instead of someone with a higher rank? I know they are family, and Carlos gave Renzo his black, but it seems kind of odd... Kind of like me giving Ari his brown in 10th P

i dont think it was renzo that made the decision he should be promoted, but rather for the actual handing to him of the belt it was renzo

I thought it was the IBJJF that decided to do that? Many times, the federations give rank advancement to others (even if they aren't higher belts).

If you think about it, Helio never gained a belt in JIU JITSU (although he is a 5th dan in judo I think). He just learned the art, changed it and became the founder. In actual fact, Helio's status as a 10th Dan is not what he is. He is actually a SOKE (founder of the system and falls outside of the ranking).

Maybe I am wrong...that's how they do it in JJJ

CEB
10-16-2008, 07:54 AM
FWIW

Soke isn't a founder. Western wannabees have really warped the understanding of the title.

Generally Soke is quite the opposite of founder. You can sort of liken the title to that of an old European guildmaster. The administrative job of Soke is to protect monopolistic control of the iemoto system he leads, not to perpetuate the creation of new ryuha.

Dr Bodiford wrote a very article on the subject.

Have a nice weekend.

Ok, so lets all learn about Aaron,
We'll skip taekwondo, karate and bujinkan cos frankly thats just embarrassing:D
I started BJJ at this place training under Matt Cooper:
http://www.advancemartialarts.com.au/
trained there for about 6 months, then they changed location (too far from my house)
So I got some friends together and started a grappling club, I bought a bunch of books and that is how I found Eddie. Training one day a week and being the most experienced person there was not enough for me so I was stoked when about a year later I discovered this place:
http://www.garrabjj.com.au/garra.php
the instructors name was Eduardo Diaz and I learned a lot from him, I got my blue belt after about a year. A small group with some good guys but they were somewhat hostile to 10th planet stuff, and I was somewhat hostile to the Gi, so a change was needed.
This is where I am now: http://www.integratedmma.com/indexLarge.htm
Danny Higgins is a BAD DUDE! and there are soo many good guys to train with, including one other 10th planet guy! I've only been there a month but I feel like I've improved a lot already. Add to that going to seminars with Frank and hopefully going to melbourne to train... Aarons gonna get good...

I was in Peru for a couple of weeks on vacation and then when I got home I immediately started doing work on a charity Haunted House I help build/operate every year for Halloween.

I have had about 10 minutes to breathe outside of work, training, circuits, and Haunted House stuff in the past 3 weeks. Hopefully starting next week life will be more relaxed and I can catch up here.

Plus it is kind of nice to get some bearing on a person's frame of reference when they post something. For instance are they speaking from experience or are they a keyboard warrior who just regurgitates stuff they have read off the internet.

I refer to this and the introductory / stats thread often after reading some people's posts. But that is just me.

Have a great week.
