I am just wondering when you start to "flow" with your moves in BJJ. I remember Eddie saying that its all about repetitions, but is there a time (months years?) when you shouldnt have to think too much about your next move and it all starts breaking down and becoming second nature?

That all depends on the level of the person you are facing. A blue belt verus a brown belt won't be flowing too much..he'll be in survival mode. I don't think there is a specific time for when someone flows, it just happens when you've got 2 things down:

1) repetition of the moves 1000s of times
2) the ability to think 2 or 3 moves ahead of what you are doing

I have found that REALLY good jiu jitsu players are also calm, keep the strength in check (unless they really want to pour it on or prove a point).

Finally, you can flow with some guys and others you can't. There is a wrestler buddy of mine that it is impossible to flow with because he plays a SUPER tight game and tries to smoother you. He fights at a snails pace, slowly working moves. For him, I've got to be REALLY sneaky.

I would imagine that BJJ is a little harder when competing against a wrestler.

Ari- do you find that a wrestler with little BJJ experience could go in and win a BJJ tourney? I am not talking a wrestler vs a black belt but maybe a wrestler and a white belt. Also, at what belt color would a wrestler start having a lot of trouble against the BJJ player?

Thanks

I dont know if my little story gives any help, because this could be the norm, or it could be a 1 in a million thing. A college wrestler just started at our school, and he gives some of the high blues and low purples fits when he is on top, and is darn near impossible to sweep, but he does have more openings on bottom.
