Like it? Hate it? What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of it? I have not had the chance to learn anything about it besides 1 sweep.

i personally dont really use it.. i haven't learned much about it yet though so it could just be my ignorance...
when someone on bottom does it to me i usually mash their legs together.. or hug them, and walk right around for a pass...
so i dont use it myself

to be honest, if you get used to using it, it can be a good way to control your opponent. training with Santino he had us do several drills with butterfly and although akward at first, once you get used to using it, it can be very effective. i thought that it wouldn't be a good guard but he's a witch at it and is pretty damn tough to pass. i'd recommend at least trying to learn its pros and cons

I have got to play with it a bit (Monday night) during our half guard specific training. I liked it so far even though I really dont know much about it at all, but the sweep options from it were nice I thought.

what i found most useful is the ability to use the opponent's movement (momentum in a way) to screw with their balance and ability to pass. in no way am i super proficient with it, but the basics make sense and with more practice, i've been able to improve. problem is, i haven't been able to keep up with my training which has greatly reduced the ability i did have. oh well, in due time.

Butterfly is a more advanced type of guard (so is the x guard, spider guard and to some degree, half guard). Using it for the first time can seem strange and impractical. When someone has a GOOD butterfly, it can be brutally hard to pass.
When I touch upon the butterfly with my students, I start by drilling them on trying to pass it. We do this for a while, over and over, so the person using can keep adjusting and adding tricks to make it stronger.
I sometimes grab students and hold them in my butterfly for about 2 minutes, then show them the power of the sweeps that come from it (or attacks of the legs).
To be honest, even JJ player has their favorite type of guard and tend to be stronger in on than the other.

oddly enough the night of the same day that i made my post about never really using it, my instructor had us do passing the guard drills but with no hands... and not closing the guard...
so i ended up trying the butterfly and it was a lot more effective than i thought...
i hope i get a chance to learn about it

i use it mainly for the butterfly sweep, and a few sacrafise throws can be used from the butterfly guard... personally i keep my knees high and don't close the guard, because like shogun in a few of his fights, if you work an open guard, and have good endurance and leg strength it gives you a lot of opportunity to throw subs, or execute on sweeps, just a lot of hip movement to prevent your opponent from passing and a last resort for if there going to pass you close your guard, so personally i like "WORKING" out of the open guard, tough to pass on me and if you try i can close and start again, it's a great set up for sweeping more often and faster, and you don't let your opponent your going to use a technique, because when im in some ones guard... if they open i know a sweep or sub is coming:cool:

ive not rlly learned how to do alot of stuff from butterfly, so sumtimes it is kind of awkward, but i do see the potentials for sweeps and stuff from there, which is y id like to learn more about it, but we havent covered it much.
Speaking of x-guard, we did a bit of practice with it the week b4 last, i rlly like it, altho the legs may not b the most secure keeping a good grip with ur arm around the other leg provides alot of stanility and control, and is hard to get out of becuz control is easily exerted on the standing person. i guess royler uses x-guard too, cuz we learned it soon after his visit and seminar at the school, which i was unfortunately unable to attend
Maybe we could have guard feature weeks on subs101
