Back with source and more interesting news. News is Serra may need surgery so he may be out for awhile. Due to that, this fight will be for the interm WW strap.

Thats Huge! I am rooting for GSP. As a matter of fact I would just about cheer anyone on against Hughes.

i spoke to Serra's father yesterday and he said Matt is doing a lot better and will only be out for a few months... he should be back soon.
Very excited about Hughes vs GSP 3 .... although i'm a little worried about GSP not having enough time to get in his best shape...
Hughes is dangerous even when you ARE at 100%

I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am to see this fight. I cannot stand Matt Hughes. Granted, tv reality producers can make you look anyway they like, but 2 seasons of TUF, have proved to me, that Hughes is an egomaniac. GSP is, in my humble opinion the F'ing man. I cannot wait to watch George pummel Hughes.
Hopefully Hughes retires after the severe beating GSP lays on him

yeah im hoping for that too, i respect hughes as a fighter, he's one of the greatest to ever live, but he's i hate him outside of the ring, he's cocky and pre fight b4 gsp hughes 2 he was all cocky and that makes me mad, especially if you lose... i love gsp he's modest he has it all, great wrestler, good jiu jitsu, and has great stand up with a sorta muy thai look, he's the future of the sport, or i guess you can say present now, because everyone is becoming what he is... good in all areas and thats what MMA is, all mma fighters should be great or at least managable in all parts of the game, and if they are all 1 catagory of a fighter, they better be amazing at that catagory or they won't do to well

The only thing you have to worry about with GSP is that he doesn't over train and get hurt. I have yet to see GSP out of shape.

good point ryan, GSP is always in tip top shape, UNLESS he overtrains and injures himself yet again. he REALLY wants this fight and i hope he doesn't push himself too hard trying to get ready, it's a legit fear fans of GSP should be concerned with. i'm sure he'll take hughes out though!

If hughes gets beat again i dunno what they are going to do with him, he definitely deserves some added respect for picking the hardest replacement he could though, since he got to pick i believe.

No shot that Hughes picked GSP for this fight. Dana and the gang picked Georges, because no one else in the Welterweight division is even close to the top 3.
That being
1) Matt Serra (As he has the title..and therefore, for now..is the best)
2)GSP
3)Hughes
respectively...IMO..
then everyone else.
Its only fair to put Georges in this fight. If he had to wait for Serra to get healthy, and then for Serra/Hughes he would have to wait at least 6 months, possibly a year before getting a shot at the title again. And that just isn't right. Kudos to the big wigs over there in the UFC for recognizing this fact and giving him the shot he deserves.

"As most of you know, Serra has dropped out of the fight due to a back injury. I found out and was told that I get to basically pick my opponent. The UFC had called some welterweights, some said they wouldn’t take the fight; but ultimately I got to choose and I chose Georges St. Pierre. I asked to fight GSP." is quoted from his website.
You are right it is only fair to put GSP in, but as i expected from Dana he offered hughes some others and hughes picked GSP. Dana is probably pissed because if hughes loses again he'll have lost two of his golden boys in Chuck and now Hughes.
I think there are plenty of people who could beat Matt Hughes.
1. Karo Parisyan
2. Jon Fitch
3. Josh Koscheck
4. Dustin Hazelett

I stand corrected. I don't frequent Matt Hughes page much as I pretty much loathe the guy. I'll be routing for Georges all the way in this one. As will pretty much everyone here. But we're a bit biased towards the nice guys here.

Seriously? Kos has no chance against Hughes. Kos would flail around like an idiot trying to hold Matt down, Matt reverses, mounts, and finishes the fight through strikes.

Haha you're right, i dunno why you picked kos ryan.
The only way i see KOS winning is if their wrestling cancels each other out and kos wins the stand up game with his awkward style - like how he beat diego.

Why did I pick Koscheck over Hughes? Good question. First, Josh Koscheck is an all American wrestler with college wrestling experience. I believe Koschecks fight with GSP has taught him a lot to compete at that level. Second, have you ever heard the saying that styles make fights? In my honest opinion, Koschecks wrestling is better than Hughes' and Matt isn't much of a striker unless it is GNP

Great match up and very exciting to watch because GSP forces anyone to up their level of game.
Matt is in an interesting position here. I think both fighters will have to adjust their game plans. While it is clear that GSP can kick the crap out of Hughes (literally), I think Matt is going to be ready this time.
Does Matt want the belt back? You bet he does.
While anything can happen in a fight (we all speculate because its fun), I think that if Matt Hughes is the Matt Hughes of OLD, and comes in like a bull and lifts and slams GSP over and over (or grinds him down), Hughes has a very good chance at winning.
However, Matt hasn't looked like that in a long time. As each fighter get's better at MMA, they loose a little bit of that original skill that got them to where they are. As Rogan always says " Look at his striking. His hands are so much better." Problem is, it was and IS Matt's Wrestling, GNP and pure strength that are his bread and butter.
I've seen it time and time again, fighters who say " Everyone knows I'm a wrestler (or jiujitsu) guy. I wanted to showcase my hands and let everyone know I can stand and trade."
HUH? To be honest, I get really bored when fights go the distance. I don't really like MMA fighters ('well rounded in everything but not great in one thing'). I love it when strikers are strikers, wrestlers are wrestlers, and jiu jitsu guys are jiu jitsu guys. As it has been said above, styles make fights. It's the differences that make fights interesting, not the similarities.
At any rate, this sounds like a pro Hughes thread. Its not. I am a GSP fan thru and thru and, like Matt, if GSP comes with a FIRE in his belly, he'll put on one hell of a show and will be the next Champ.
Should be fun.
I like GSP too and not just because I can't stand Matt Hughes but because GSP is a great ambassador for the sport, he is always in shape and he seems very humble. Can't wait for this fight.

Personally though, i feel that the only reason Matt won their first fight was pure inexperience by GSP. if you watch that fight, GSP was doing quite well, and this is when Hughes was arguably at his best, while GSP was barely an up and comer. if not for GSP maybe panicking a bit and tapping with 1 second left in the first, i firmly believe he was the better man that day and would have pulled it out (provided he didn't cave to the jitters). GSP is ridiculously strong, much stronger than he is given credit for and that would negate Hughes' strength advantage. after all, hughes couldn't put GSP down in their 2nd fight. it will be entertaining though, probably the best fight of their trilogy. will be fun!

I agree there. But I think both beat him. Like I said, I think Matt's experience, and sheer strength are what would put him over on Kos.
As for the Hughes/GSP fight? I loathe hughes yes. But I have what my friends around here call a mancrush on GSP. He just simply amazes me every time I see him fight (Minus the Serra fight). He's so fast, strong, powerful, explosive, Has huge heavy hands, outstanding on the ground.... yeah. He's in my humble opinion, the best all around fighter in the UFC. He's, if not THE best, in the top 5 in terms of sheer athleticism. To top it off. He kinda makes Randy Couture look a little edgy, and that's saying something. To come off as a nicer guy than Captain America...Ambassador of the Sport indeed.

don't worry Dan, we won't bust out any mancrush jokes...i am on your side about GSP though, he is the most complete fighter in the UFC, maybe all of MMA and i feel that the Serra loss forced him to become a mentally tougher fighter to add to his physical talent. i just don't see him losing to hughes, no disrespect to matt though, he's obviously a champion in the ring, even if he has a bit of a crusty exterior

Sadly, I lost one of my regular tippers last night. For those of you who don't know, I am a poker dealer. One of my regular players has Hughes for a client. Financial Advisor, or something. I can't really remember. Anyway, he and I had been going back and forth over Hughes and Serra. He hates Serra as much as I hate Hughes. I respect him in the ring, and I'm sure away from the sport, he is a good midwestern guy. But his ego in the sport annoys me. I understand that the tv producers can make him look whatever way they like on the show. But he isn't near the coach Serra is IMO, or GSP. 2 times as a coach on the show, and he's failed miserably. Franklin outcoached him and now so did Serra.
Anyhow, when my player came to me the other night and bragged up Serra's injury. I said something like, "Yeah, now Hughes has no shot. He's going up against the best fighter in the UFC." Partially kidding, partially serious, as you know of my great admiration for GSP. He turned around on his heels, and hasn't spoken to me since.

Not to fighter bash...but Hughes is pretty much how he seems on TUF, if not worse sometimes. Check out my location, I live about 1/2 mile from him. Last time he fought GSP I tried to put a GSP sign in our lawn (we live on one of the busier streets in town), but my wife didnt like the idea too well. Mostly because all of her family adores Hughes.
I would have put 2 signs up:D

I hate to hear that. Matt came to Springfield last year to dedicate the Joe Bee wrestling gym at Springfield High School. He seemed like a real nice young man.

Ya thats the thing. In general public he puts off some nice persona like he happens to be such a nice guy. But the people who know him well know the things he does behind closed doors. Like I said I dont want to fighter bash or badmouth anyone, but my main problem with him is he is 1 way on TV and at home (like doing things for local churches and whatnot), but is completely different when there arent many fans around. Bah enough of that, it gets me too upset, off to something different :p

I've heard some stories about Matt from legit posters being on sherdog for so long..
One was about in college how he would pick fights with people he could easily beat due to his training.
Another was some long winded thing about how everyone was signing autographs and how matt blew this guy and his son off who were waiting 3 hours or something... I'll have to find that post it was pretty spite-full.

Nope, i Am a big Hughes fan, i hope he demolishes GSP, I can't really take anyones word for his personality until i meet him in person...so based on what i know, he's a kick ass fighter and knows a hell of alot about that sport, enough to be so dominant for the time he was. So Hughes all the way.
