I saw a flier for a BJJ club at my university and thought to myself "This is it!"

So I need to know what all do I need? Just a Gi? I am 5' 10" 170 lb. Where do I find basic equipment? I sorta looked into ordering a gi online but I don't know what to look for.

I can't wait!

i would recomend going to the club first, ask if they will supply a gi in the charge of joining, or if you should bring your own... but as far as gear pretty much a drink a gi and come to learn, listen to as much as you can, drill over and over to help get techniques down, and have fun... you have found a great art and me and many other members of the site love the art, and i am sure you will too... and if there is rough times stick it out, this sport may tempt you to quit at some times but i urge you to stick it out and if you do i really wish you the best of luck and hope you enjoy your time training

WELCOME TO A GREAT FORUM

Welcome to one of the best secrets on the web. As Hadaka said, ask your school if they have gis they supply to you, or want you to buy. If they are open to you getting one from somewhere else feel free to ask around here about peoples thoughts. We are all glad to help as much as possible. Welcome once again to our extended family!

Hey Danjr!

Welcome. Please feel free to add you two cents or ask anyone of us for advice. This is a GREAT forum and I learn stuff ALL THE TIME.

Where are you located and what is the BJJ school name?

Cheers
Ari

Also, there are some clubs that do not allow patches so you may want to visit for the clubs requirements. You may not even want to join this particular club once you visit so make sure this is what you want.

I go the the University of Iowa in Iowa City, the club is called the Hawkeye Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club.

I found their website

http://www.uiowa.edu/~armbar/

Honestly I've been interested in joining for a long time. I've wrestled a long time ago and it was the best workout I've ever done, so I'm pretty pumped about actually getting into martial arts.

I have thought a lot about this and decided to wait until second semester (a month or so) to become a member since we pay by semester and money is tight. But I thought I'd check it out anyway and learn some of their workouts since thats what Im in it for and I need to change mine. Basically I'm just getting ready to learn.
