yea so this was started back when gracie jiu-jitsu had its own sepeate forum, i think evry1 knows the basic history of jiu-jitsu in brazil, so . . . sum1 mentioned a detailed history involving a split between helio and carlos, id like to hear that, when i started getting into jiu-jitsu i read the helio side of the story, but ive heard a less detailed version involving carlos with little mention of helio, so . . . post what u know, skipping the early days with maeda, but start with where helio's story starts with the modification of the techniques or w/e

I recall reading a great history with Carlos point of view somewhere. If I find it, I'll post it.
Sometimes these threads get 'funny' because when Judo guys or Traditional Jiu Jitsu guys add their views, many times it ends up with " BJJ is just Kosen Judo" or " BJJ can find its roots in Japanese Jiu Jitsu."
So, to be very clear. Yes, BJJ has pulled from other arts. Judo pulled from old school Japanese Jiu Jitsu, but each art went in its own direction and specialized in certain areas. All these arts have things in common but they are their own seperate arts nonetheless.
Anyways, on with the history lesson.....

Carlos and Helio were fine, Carlson split from the family (not sure if they ever kissed and made up or not), but what started as normal family rivalry turned worse from my understanding. Personally I think Helio battling vertigo and overcoming the strength aspects of judo and adding alot of leverage moves to his game to compensate makes a much better story....unless you like drama I suppose.

The beautiful thing is that they gave us what we know today as GJJ/BJJ. But if you sit back & think about it. The more we do it, the more we are gonna taylor it for ourselves. So GJJ/BJJ will always be evolving.
As Bruce Lee says, he isn't a master until he is dead. You are not a master if you are still learning.
