How important is strength and speed in bjj? Obviously there is a point where strength can completely nullify technique, but how much of a factor is strength and speed in any given bjj/mma fight? Is it the most important factor? Secondary to technique but still important?

Along the same lines, how important is strength and speed in boxing or muay thai? Would you say athleticism in general is more of a factor during the stand up phase of a fight or ground phase?

quickness and patience is a nice goal for BJJ. Strength is nice, and will help you muscle people into an armbar ect or muscle out of it, but I think its the quickness of mind and body to see the opening for a move and take advantage of it before your opponent can react that makes a large difference. I also dont have years of experience so take my opinion for what its worth lol. I can not comment on standup because I only grapple.

As it is said: given 2 opponents with equal skill and size, the guy with the better conditioning, strength and speed will usually win.

However, jj tends to be a patient art and the masters will work you until you gas. Many fighters come in full bore (beginners or untrained) and then gas and then fall victim to the jj guy's technique.

If you are an athlete with skill...you are a wrecking machine. They go hand in hand but the JJ maxim is : technique over strength and this still applies today.

in boxing conditioning and strength definetly help but if u have crazy good then u can most likely beat someone who is just throwing haymakers or trying to muscle u around. i had a fight(not in the ring) where the guy was way above my weight class but had no skill and just tried to kill me but couldnt seem to land a punch, and ive seen that happen many other times. so id go with technique and speed over strength

technique is very important in BJJ, because people like Helio gracie who are 80+years old can still dominate a football player who is a blue belt, but strength+great technique is deadly, look at rickson gracie, he had near flawless technique, and extremely good physique... he was ripped with muscle, and had great conditioning, and this made him a great BJJ player, and also an undefeated MMA fighter, but if you took away 90% of ricksons knowlege and left him with 10% of his knowlege in BJJ and put him in a match against a rickson who had 90% less strength, and conditioning but 100% of his technique i think the one with 100% technique would win (90-10 is just an example, it could be anywhere from 51-49 to 99-1 etc... im just trying to say the one with better technique would beat the one with less technique and better strength)
