Hey everyone:

I thought I'd post this. I get lots of emails on requests and such. This is one I got today. I am SHOCKED that instructors from other styles still think like this. I think it is not only a DANGER to the student, but a totally unrealistic way to look at real combat.

Hi, I'm in a Hapkido school and the master doesn't allow submissions from the bottom. I came from a ground school and 80% of my submissions are from the bottom, so do you have any tips on sweeps or transitions from the bottom. The master also values speed and power. Any help would be great.

Speed and power mean nothing when you hit the ground. I sent the guy this video:

When I hear about stuff like this, I loose my mind.

I remember seeing that video a long time ago. Sad to hear that some places still see the same way they did 10 yrs ago.

ugh, the thing is... people who just have strength or speed don't know that you can be successful with out it, i mean BJJ is mainly form, and technique... if you have 2 people and 1 is strong or fast it may help them be almost as good as a weak or slow person with good technique, and on the flip side of this... if 2 people have the same technique and good form, the faster/quicker person will always win, thats how educated bjj people see things today, and it is correct, speed and power may help you be better or even the playing field, but it is in no way place or form a replacement for good technique, a lot of hapkido instructors try and say okay your strong so you'll have knock out power, or your quick so you can work around people with good technique, but if you rely on all your speed and have slop job techniques in other martial arts then bjj you will lose, as Rorion showed 3 times against the schools leader who thought he has "flawless" form in hapkido

so like ari said, speed and power mean nothing when you hit the ground, superior technique will win in that fight (ps:nice link to a classic vid:p )
