hey guys,

I just started BJJ almost a month now... It came down to Judo or BJJ i didnt know anything about neither a couple of months ago. I chose BJJ from watch matches on YouTUBE and joined a club here in Louisiana soon after. And I LOVE it.

Im just starting to find myself understanding what im doing and tapped out a couple of people yesterday for the first time...

I have my first competition this saturday...any advice?

kinda nervous, havnt worked on much takedowns

Check out this thread about some things to do or avoid while standing http://www.brazilianjiujitsugear.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2176
Also, keep calm and remember to breathe. Have a great time, take some pictures or vid for us. Lastly, win or lose, try to walk away learning something. Good luck, and welcome to the boards!

Hey Steve,

I just had my first tournament last Saturday (working on getting a vid up). I've been doing BJJ for just about 6 months. I felt really good going in - not too nervous and really just excited to see how I do.

I've been doing great in class and can tap some of the more advanced students at times, so I thought I'd be in a great position for "novice" and "white-belt" opponents. What I took away from my two matches (and consequently, two defeats) are:

Pace: Tournament matches are balls-to-the-wall quick. Maybe just in the lower classes, but I went into the match expecting to analyze my opponent and then work off what he was doing. MISTAKE. I wasn't ready for him to come straight at me and he took me right down. Go right after them - even if your plan is to pull guard, do it aggressively.

Plan: I had no plan, didn't know what I wanted to do, and so when I pulled guard in my second match (more aggressive, but still slow and timidly) I was waiting to see what my opponent would do before I attacked. So by the time I realized what guard pass he was using, I had to fight just to keep guard - no time to set up my own submissions. Have a plan, from whatever position you want to start from.

That's what I learned from my first experience. Hope it helps - and feel free to add or correct everyone - one tournament doesn't make me a pro. ;)
