'Top' in terms of highest quality, or top as in personal favourites? As if its the former, then the top 5 would probably be something like this:

1. Citizen Kane
2. La Règle du jeu
3. The Godfather Parts I & II
4. Battleship Potemkin
5. Seven Samurai

Though thats just going off a few of the more respected 'top film' polls, like BFI: I've never seen La Règle du jeu or Battleship Potemkin (well, except that famous scene with the pram running down the steps), but given how often they pop up on these lists, I get the impression I really should.

If you just mean my personal top films, then that would be a completely different list (although Seven Samurai would be in the top 10). Its almost all animation, and largely bound up in sentimentality and nostalgia. But meh. As I've shoved these up on Flixster before, might as well reproduce here:

The Flight of Dragons: The Flight of Dragons is not just a film for me, it is a major part of my childhood. I absolutely adore this animation, from the plot (which isn't half-bad for a children's animation), the characters, the atmosphere, the music, and perhaps most of all, the feeling of being immersed in a fully-formed fantasy world (no doubt helped by being based on a book: the explanation of dragon flight is particularly inventive). Its tough to choose between this and Conan as my all-time favourite film, but if I was forced to decide, I think I'd have to pick this.

Conan the Barbarian: Magnificently camp epic smattered with some of the most hilariously macho lines ever, delivered by a man born to play Conan. Beautiful cinematography, sparse dialogue and stunning set design, all brought together though an amazing score by Basil Poledouris. Instead of all that difficult 'talking' business, Arnie was largely left to do what he does best: pose, grunt and hit things.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Winds (Kaze no tani no Naushika): Main reason I enjoyed Nausicaa so much was the feminist overtone; there were strong female characters in both heroic and 'villain' roles; women exhibited intelligence, physical strength, combat prowess, along with the more stereotypical compassion; the 'villains' were not black and white, and indeed some turned out to be quite 'heroic' (the ohmu, for example). Hayao Miyazaki has a number of running themes, which this pre-Ghibli film showcases: strong female protagonist and flight (pretty much every Miyazaki film features something flying, be that a blimp, a glider, a broomstick or his real love, a plane), along with environmental concerns that would be repeated in Princess Mononoke. Also, the full version is plenty longer than 94mins - more like 2hrs, yet another reason its awesome. Hooray for long films!

Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust: Absolutely gorgeous animation, a great Gothtastic plot and lots of cool action sequences. Unusually for an anime, this was intended for an English-speaking cast rather than original Japanese getting dubbed, which may explain why the voice acting is so good (at least IMO: I know there are those who hate the voices, particularly the comic tone adopted for Left Hand). May be a little gory for some, though.

Uproar in Heaven (Da nao tian gong): This 1965 animation from China has been with me for a long time. Judging by my search of The Times archive (yes, I'm that geeky), the broadcast my parents recorded would have probably been from Christmas Day 1981 at 15:40 on BBC 2. I was less than a year old, and have been watching it ever since. The story is all about the famous Chinese mythological figure, the Monkey King, and the frustration he causes the Emperor of Heaven. Everything is Mandarin with no subtitles, but for the BBC broadcast (I'm not sure if this was part of a festival or a commonly added part of the soundtrack) there is a soothing English narration summarising what's going on, which crops up intermittently. Unfortunately, I don't think there is a DVD release in English yet, so I've been relying on my battered old copy from the TV (transferred to DVD, of course, but not great quality). I'd like to add Nezha Nao Hai (Nezha Conquers the Dragon King) too, which similarly has been with me for years, but not seeing it on Facebook movies.

What do you think to the recent resurgence of zombie stuff, like with Shawn of the Dead? I'm generally not keen on horror, but I did enjoy the horror-comedy thing Simon Pegg managed there. Evil Dead II (never much liked the first one, though the third was good too) is of course the classic of the genre, but Pegg seems to have helped get a mini-revival going.

Heh - I may be about to lose it then. While I'm aware of the acclaim, I really didn't like Grave of the Fireflies (or the film it was paired with, My Neighbour Totoro), for a whole bunch of reasons I could post up here if you'd like. I've also got some big fat Studio Ghibli posts up my sleeve (I love Miyazaki, again for a number of reasons), if anyone wants to have a babble about their output on either this or a new thread? Maybe a general anime thread?

I assume you're not counting Doctor Who as a comedy there, though it certainly has comic touches (especially the more recent stuff)?

Comedy series definitely deserves its own thread.

Always surprised me that Monty P was so successful in the US, as I wouldn't have expected the humour to translate as well as it obviously has over the years. Or perhaps it doesn't, and the US gets something else out of it? I'm guessing Canada is perhaps a little closer to British sensibilities, so might fit them better (though from the brief period I spent there, the TV was pretty bad, mostly from the US anyway. Might have just been I had bad reception in Banff :p ).

The Golden Compass

Really? What did you like about it? Of course its all a matter of personal taste, as with most art forms, but I've not come across too many people who liked it (though it did fine at the box office, so plenty must disagree).

Personally, I thought it was one of the worst book-film adaptations I've seen in a long time. Jumped at random from plot point to plot point as if the screenwriter was in a hurry to finish, took no time to develop characters, and some horrible miscasting: McKellen was completely the wrong voice to go for. Though in its defence, I did think Kidman and Craig gave a good account of themselves, and the lead character wasn't as annoying as I'd expected (I found her a bit irritating in the book too, so didn't have high hopes for her screen version).

Which was a big disappointment, as the source material is excellent.

Which was a big disappointment, as the source material is excellent.i never read the book, but i liked it a lot when i saw it in theater, i was a big really enjoyed that whole sci-fi feel with the alternate universe with the dust etc... and how everyone had their own demons etc... i thought it was a cool movie in general, i loved the armored bears and the fight scene of the king and burnison was awesome... overall i found it a very interesting movie and i can see why a lot of people didn't like it a lot but personally i love arctic scenery and am a big sci-fi fan in a sense and again this movie actually started a little slow for most people but i liked it start to finish, surely just my opinion

slideyfoot

i never read the book

Ah - yeah, I can see how that could affect your opinion. Films normally struggle to meet fan expectations when they're drawing on well-known source material, particularly as those expectations are often quite unfair. For example, I had lots of things to bitch about in the X-Men films (mainly casting: Jackman was too tall, Berry wasn't anywhere near regal enough, McKellen was far too haggard and scrawny - in fact, the only two castings I was completely happy with were Grammer and Stewart) which a non-comic geek wouldn't give a flying Legacy Virus about. ;)

Then again, I wasn't annoyed at The Golden Compass due to casting (except McKellen. Again - damn, they need to give that guy better suited roles! Its not like there's a shortage of excellent English stage actors with gravitas to choose from), more the butchering of the narrative. Quite literally butchering, as it was chopped up and thrown all over the place.

If I'd come to the film fresh, like you did, then I might have focused more on the various cool ideas from Pullman's book. As it was, I was already fully aware of those, so was looking out for how they'd rework the plot and the characters, which was the glaring weakness of the film.

Then there was the somewhat cowardly muting of the polemic against organised religion, which is very evident in Pullman's original work. Kinda like the anti-Narnia (which interestingly enough, also got toned down on film, though the other way: much less religiosity than the books, which got irritatingly preachy, and even bigoted, the more Lewis wrote).

You should definitely give Pullman's books a try: would be interesting to see if it changed your opinion of the film.
