Just wondering which people felt was harder to pass.
The reason I ask is that I was rolling w/ a big guy. Wide enough that I had a very hard time closing my guard. I wondered if either would offer me greater control or better chances to sweep. Thanks for any suggestions. Love the site.

Open guard. I always get caught with the open guard sweeps.

open guard u gotta be really good at butterfly to use it effectively but open guard is just as effective (if not more) as the closed guard it allows alot of mobility

So why would someone want to use the closed guard,ever... If what you're sayign is true ?

It all depends on the person using the guard.

In no gi, I go no problems with open guard. In gi, I can easily pass butterfly guard.

Either is good.I prefer transitioning between butterfly, open, and closed.Sweeps are easy to come by for me with Bfly,as long as i trap an arm.I train exclusively GI,so i have become good at stopping someone from passing.I tend to keep my knees wide,so when my opponent goes to pass they are somewhat off balance and sweeps become easy.If im getting passed i go to foot on bicep. If i cant sweep or submit from there,i closed up the guard and restart. Some people think butterfly is better for no gi,but it is my best game with the gi.I currently am trying to add X-guard so i have another option.Marcelo Garcia series 2 is all Butterfly, and x guard with the Gi.Def pick it up,it does wonders for your game

Depends on which you are better at. Butterfly has a lot of sweeps so that can be good. Open guard, at least for me, gives me more mobility.

they feel safer and u don't have to be as attentive to what ur opponent is doing, where as in open u gotta be on the ball watching for attempts to pass, however in higher level competitions u won't see much closed guard cuz opens alot more versatile
