So of course I talk about the gym with my work mates. I have only been training since November so I am really not that good. However ever since I started training there have been people in the office who suddenly think I am Van Damme in Bloodsport. At first I thought the comments were in jest but after awhile it sort of became obvious a few people were genuinely intimidated by me.

Weird... anyone else experience something similiar?

No, most of my co-workers know my temper by hanging out with me outside of work.

I get that sometimes but only because I like to mess with my friends when they are drunk and put them in all kinds of submissions:D Plus a tad bit of a reputation for fighting at the bar....

But really I am not a mal tempered or a person who anyone would need to be intimidated by unless they gave me a good reason.

i'd consider myself one of my gyms top rollers, i can beat any belt in my gym below black but i am a very kind person when rolling and never try any technique that will hurt the opponent severely and won't crank the arm really hard just at the first sign of not a tap, i'd say people know i am good, but they aren't scared of me because i don't use to much strength, don't flail at all so theres rarely ever a accidental elbow in the face knee to the face etc.. so they might think he's gonna beat me, but i don't think any one is scared im going to hurt them, so people don't really fear me

if i could describe my self in 1 word it would be mellow, 2nd to that would be pugnacious

Just want to make it clear I don't act like an asshole at work. I never screw around with anyone who doesn't train and I have never demonstrated anything at work. Its weird I am a real loner at work. Think of the stereo types of a computer programmer and I'd fit most of them. The only exception is that I am in great shape physically but on the skinny side like a runner. So I am not a menacing guy and I definitely am not threatening.... I am just a nerd who trains.

my friends know me to be kind, relaxed and respet me for who I am, not what I can do...

But the have to my graduations and know that I am fast and that I know what I do...

so no, no one is intimidated by me..
But I am known to be a hell of a lover ;-)

Everyone at school thinks I'm British champion at kickboxing.

I have no idea how that rumour came to be, but I don't mind it XD If someone is trying to mess with one of my friends, I'll just say "back off" and they run off. : P

It was much the same for me. Before I started training at the end of November, a lot of my buddies would mess around with me, do the typical drunk wrestling bit. But since I started, they don't like to try it as much, nothing ends their struggles like letting them get me on my back, and then pulling a kimura sweep with them finding me on top, and outweighing them severely, they give up rather quickly.

I broke up a few fights at school. I could just look at someone in a certain way and they'd get my message. It was pretty strange. I'm 5'7", ~125, but people respected me, regardless if they really knew me. Always been the quiet shy one. When I had something to say, or people to separate...people took notice and heeded my warnings.

I boxed with my friends, word got around that I had some skill and strength..and there you go...

Now that I have some Jiu Jitsu under my belt I've become more "dangerous".

Oh well.

if i saw a 5'7 buck 25 kid at my school i think he wouldn't be noticed if he walked into a fight when i was in school the people that were fighting were always 6'2 225 and thick, some brutal fights

er......unfortunately for me, when my friends eventually found out through my best friend that i do bjj, they try to fuck with me, so i had the opposite reaction. however, the few times they did try to fuck with me, once i did the chicken arm thing that ari had on a video and another was a hip throw into an arm bar and then they stopped cold. lol :)

One of the hardest lessons in martial arts is to not show your power to anyone. It always comes out eventually but I try my damndest. It usually happens when someone asks what I do in my spare time and I feel obligated to be honest with them. It is a good idea to not tell anyone that isn't close to you that you train and you will have a HUGE edge if something were to go down.

I think I'm guilty of the "I'm a cagefighter" business :)

My bosses know what I do in my spare time, and have made a few comments like "Don't mess with him, he's in Fight Club." Which is kind of strange since I wear a lab coat for a living.

I'd tell you more, but the first rule of Fight Club ...

My entire crew came to my MMA fight. We had people from our other location cover the store so everyone could go. Got beat up a little bit and the people down at corporate never let me live it down.

right before i left my last job I started traning, I had to change my evening avaibilty, when asked why I had to be honest, this started a shit storm and even the DM had to ask me about it on his next visit to my location. I say BJJ and everyone automatical though I was like this badassed cage fighting mofo, mind you I am a big guy but I'm not down for all that type of stuff ill watch it on tv and anylize it and help coach but it's just no my thing.

Now with my current job I own the fuckin place so my partner just thinks im an idiot. But him being one of my best friends I could care less what he thinks lol.

It's annoying as all hell too because I'm constantly being told that they don't have the time and money that I have (like I'm rich with no kids or something) but then spend all day talking about all the tv they watched on their $5,000 big screen.
