Are you being taught to go for the submission above all else, or more of a points game? I ask because my instructor stresses the points (which we need to learn dont get me wrong), and it is starting to sound like he is teaching us to keep track of your points and know when to stall kind of thing. I could be wrong on reading him on this point. I have never heard him say to make sure you "finish the fight" or anything like that. Maybe I am reading into things too much lol.

Why wouldn't you use all of the rules? I judo, if you're a head on points and you wind up with a turtled opponent, you work your ass off to turn him. Not because you expect to actually finish the match that way, but because it chews up the clock,

BJJ shouldn't be any different. If you've got a few point lead and position with waning time on the clock, why not just ride it out? It's up to your opponent to escape and score his own points, isn't it?

Now, if you're in a large tough bracket, maybe you need to get that quick sub just so you can stay fresh as the day progresses.

Stradegy is as important as tactics in the long wrong.
At least that's my belief.

At my school. we are taught to end the fight in as quick and safe manner as possible. At least for me, it should be taught as a self defense first, and a sport second. I know it doesn't add much, but in the competitions that my instructor affliates our school with, they frown upon stalling and in the event of a judges decision, the aggressor will more than likely pull the victory...my 2 cents...but go for the W....submission attempts keep your opponent on the defensive, and less likely to attack you.

I HATE the point stalling game. However, if it is in the rules, then you should use whatever it takes to win.

Having said that, I really prefer the 'submission series" tourneys (or lock flow tourneys). They have NO POINTS. The winner is by submission or the one who was more active in attempting to submit. Great to watch, no stalling and LOTS of finishes.

strategy is important in the sport. Its like wrestling, yeah you want the pin but points are still a win. I think your coach just may want you to fight smart instead of hard. See, I have seen many matches where the wrestler will go for the pin and end up making a mistake and losing. With points, you can get up 6-2 or something and be conservative for the win. Its like GSP, he was superior but he chose not to stand with Serra.

We are taught position first then submission. Pointing is not encouraged. We have a few guys that I roll with that outweigh me by about 40 -50 pounds and when they stall I usually tease them, and say "don't be that guy".
All in all the only guys that have a tendency to stall are the wrestlers, b/c thats what they were originally taught to do.
For me personally I always feel like its a draw if I'm not submitted, and vice-versa.
