Of the mixed martial artists that fought June 2 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, MMA pioneer Royce Gracie (Pictures) was likely the last man anyone would have tabbed a steroid user.

However, on Thursday, that veneer was crushed when the California State Athletic Commission revealed the 40-year-old Brazilian tested positive in both "A" and "B" samples for traces of Nandrolone, a commonly used anabolic steroid.

Currently vacationing in Spain after defeating Kazushi Sakuraba (Pictures) on points, Gracie e-mailed Sherdog.com to refute the CSAC report.

"I have never in my 14-year fighting carrier [sic] taken anything other then natural supplements and natural proteins," said Gracie, who was paid $300,000 to fight. "As such, I am shocked that anything was found in my system."

The early June bout marked the first time Gracie -- who competed five times in Japan from 2000-2005 after taking half a decade away from the ring following 13 unregulated UFC contests on American soil -- was required to undergo tests for steroids conducted by a regulatory body.

Though Gracie fought Matt Hughes (Pictures) on May 27, 2006 in Los Angeles, California was not testing for anabolic agents at that point, said CSAC Executive Officer Armando Garcia.

"I am looking into this issue right now and will file an appeal with the CSAC," Gracie's e-mail continued. "I have been training [for] this fight since October of 2006, as initially the show was supposed to be on March 15th. Over the course of training I have taken legal supplements that are available in GNC to anyone that wants to get them. Outside of that I have never taken anything nor ever would consider taking anything."

Cytosport, which produces the widely used "Muscle Milk" brand of supplements, lists Gracie alongside fellow fighter Nick Diaz (Pictures) and others, including Minnesota Twins pitcher Joe Nathan, as sponsored athletes.

According to Mike Kogan, who helped promote the June 2 "Dynamite!! USA" Fight Entertainment Group card, Gracie was awoken by phone calls at 4:30 Friday morning informing him of the news.

Closing out the short two-paragraph message, Gracie (14-3-3) wrote: "My good name is all I have and I do not want my fans to think that I would ever be [involved] with anything like this."

Pending appeal, which Gracie (14-3-3) must file for by July 13, the CSAC has suspended the slender Brazilian from June 2, 2007 through May 30, 2008, and fined him the maximum $2,500.

some do it just for the recovery time/ joint support rather then the muscle building..... so looks aren't everything when it comes to steroids..... Just look at Tim Sylvia and Stephan Bonner. They aren't big muscular guys but they got caught.

I don't know how I feel about steroids in sports. On one aspect I don't see whats wrong but in another aspect I see it as bad. Steroids, unlike cigarettes, only hurt the person taking them. So, statistically steroids have no risk of second hand damage. Steroids however are an edge in sports but if people are doing them anyway why should it matter? The thing I hate about MMA is that I can watch a match. Enjoy it and be happy about whoever won it but then have it taken away because that person tested positive for cocaine, pot, amphetamines or steroids (most common)

The MMA world is becoming ridiculous if these guys start doing steroids, hormones etc I was disgusted by tim sylvia when he got caught.

Most of MMA fighters don't get caught because of the random testing, for example phil baroni and the early vitor belfot I always wondered if they used anything because of the way they are cut.

I find it hard to believe that royce is using anything, it doesn't show on his body.

Every athlete that pops positive for steroids and says he is innocent is a liar!
Those test are so specific for the chemical make up of those drugs, epecially when your body doesnt produce those chemicals.
I once thought very highly of royce gracie, but now he has joined the band of other foolish athletes who artificially enhance themselves.
Steroids use only hurts the sport of MMA and it will continue till harsher punishments are given.
A $2500 fine and a year suspension. Please! How about $250,000 fine and a 5 year or 10 year suspension. Then I bet you wouldn't see any poor struggling MMA fighter or successful fighter taking steroids.
If the UFC and other organizations want to really set themselves apart from other sports and gain some respectability (of which MMA is constantly desiring) than they need to enforce harsher punishments!
Untill then we'll here the same o'l garbabe out of the same sewer mouths.

Actually Dean, a few legal supplement companies have been under investigation because several athletes who tested positive have all notified a commission on the similar brand and specific supplement.

Have you got any idea which company it is because i was going to start supplementing and don't want to be taking steroids at all especially if i don't know about it.

They weren't releasing that information in fear everyone would go out and buy it. Not sure how the investigations turned out but thats what people were saying.
