View Full Version : Training Goals Accountability Thread

Hey guys. I just thought, since most of us train, that we could use a Thread where we can discuss specific training goals, and use the other members to hold us accountable. For example, my coach and I talked back in mid March about me losing weight. He set a goal for me to go from 296 down to 250 by July 4th. I stepped on the scale tonight I weighed in at 277. So one and a half months I'm down 19 pounds. 2 months to go for the other 27. What's your goal? Weight loss, competition, flexibility???? Come on guys...let's help motivate each other.

Tom/Ari...if you feel like it, and others decide to use it...could we sticky this thread?

Im down with a sticky, but lets get at least 1 more mod to agree before we do something like that.

My personal goals are to learn, drop down to walking 185-180 (200 currently), and to get more flexible (twice as flexible as when I started). All of these things are for competition, health, and self respect ;)

Great idea Dan!

My goal is to get back down to 154lbs within the next few weeks (I'm currently at 163) which shouldn't be too hard.

I also want to improve my flexibility to a point where I can touch my head with my foot with little help from my hands.

Training goals: Remain uninjured:D or at least maintain my 75% status.

I've got several goals for myself both long and short term, and I was batting 1000 before this injury got in the way, but it also helped create new goals.

my main short term goal right now is to make myself artificially ambidextrous before I get my cast off. using my left for absolutely everything, and remaining very active has made this goal seem very reasonable. I am already astoundingly comfortable doing things i never dreamed I'd be able to do with my left. Aside from the obvious fighting advantages I've been throwing, writing, and playing other sports left-handed since my injury.

Last year when I got kicked out of my home and became what I suppose most of the people here would refer to as an uchi-deshi I set several goals for myself that seemed unrealistic at the time, but I knew would make me work hard. Now that the time-line is closing in it seems that I was a bit generous with it; though my broken arm did cause me to fail in a few areas.

Last year one of my goals achieved was to place in an expert division in a large grappling tournament. I surpassed it by doing that several times, and actually even making NAGA's Nation's Top 15 RANKED billboard in 2007 (nationallyranked.com).

Another of my goals was to win the Pan Ams or the Mundials. Unfortunately the broken arm came right before the pan-ams, and won't be healed in time for the mundials either. My last goal was to get my purple belt after winning one of those tournaments, again injury roadblock. I already know I'm skillful enough to do well in purple belt level competition, but having the big Pan-Am/Mundial medal as a blue first would have been nice on the resume :(

I think he means he grabs it sideways and holds with the pole planted in the ground. Anyway for me my next fight is in a month so its train hard and try to get stronger and but mainly prepare my mental strength. For those of you on this thread who have either been in the cage or had a physical confrontation where there is NO HOLDING BACK knows that the reality ironically feels like a dream and thats the main thing to train for.

Hit em hard.

I've been working hard on my sweeps & escapes. Over the next 6 weeks I want to focus on drilling my sweeps and escapes.

Goal: To feel comfortable in any position and be confident of getting back to a dominant position consistantly.

My goals as far as flexibility are to be able to comfortably hold a blunt stretch with no help from my hands (not going INTO the stretch with no hands, just be able to hold it there.) As far as technique, I want to train my lockdown to be instantaneous. I'm always getting my guard passed. I also want to drop to 165, I'm probably ten pounds too heavy. The weight loss is probably going to be the easiest. I just started seriously training at my gym, and I go 100% with my opponent at least once a day, with only winning on my mind. That gives me a pretty outrageous heart rate, which will melt that 10 pounds of in a matter of weeks.

Other times I'm just taking it slow, working my awareness, and trying to learn, not win. Still, getting a win under my belt would feel nice. :D

Let's see... my first goal is to keep improving my fundamentals. There is so much material out there it's easy to run before you can actually walk. Secondly, improve my flexibility and maintain or improve my strength. Third, work slowly and steadily towards achieving rank, I think it's good to be goal oriented and know that your hard work and dedication is paying off. I find the only people who say they don't care about rank are black belts...;)

Lastly, just be a good training partner and an ambassador to the art however I can. Be kind to those who are new and share in their enthusiasm.

I guess that's about it!!! Great idea for a thread!!!

my goals for this summer is to get CUT! I walk around at 155, after a hard night of judo I get out of the shower at 150 then go eat! This summer I found a thai fighting camp and the guy apparently knows a little (or a lot) of bjj so I plan to just get stronger and learn some stand up stuff.

I used to be into lifting. I still about 5x every 2 weeks.

At Muscletalk we would post training logs. The forum could have a traininglogs subforum then you could post your training routine on a day by day basis and other can assit you their input. The idea may not lend itself as well to Jiu Jitsu though. That is just how I have seen the type of thing done on other sites.

heel hook or toehold preferably, i don't like the achilles or knee bar because u have to get ur whole body into position to make them work well, but the heel hook and toe hold, i can get from any position i can grab his foot and keep his leg somewhat still, know any set ups from side control bottom? (other than knee on belly that one i know)

don't be fooled, you have to get your whole body into position to make any submission work well, especially toe holds and heel hooks which are easily rolled out of if you slap them on sloppy.

There's a ton of leglocks from those positions, though some you have to move for, and some you have to bait for.

A couple easy ones off the top of my head is from when the guy puts his knee up to block the mount like this:

http://groundfighters.net/images/IMAGE004.JPG

First thing you want to do is hook that "blocking leg" from the outside with your close arm and pull it into your body for control (you can use this even if his leg isn't up); then you grab his toes with your other hand as you slip your other arm over his shin and lock up the toe hold. However, I always prefer to go for the toe-hold as a second to the kneebar. I like to kneebar from here first, and toe-hold the opposite leg if he defends by triangling. For the kneebar from the same set-up you simply slip your far knee in place as you throw your other leg around and fall into position.

For the heel hook I usually bait and trap. It's really easy to nail when the guy tries to force you back in his guard whether you're in north south or traditional side control. Here's a video of Renzo teaching the set-up I'm describing from side-control:

http://grapplemaster.com/index.php/LegLocks/Renzo-Gracie-Heel-Hook-from-Side-Control.html

There's a lot more where those came from, but hopefully this will open things up for you a bit.

For strength goals I'd like to be able to do 50 consectutive push-ups with my perfect pushup (it looks cheesy but its actually pretty good), and trapbar deadlifts with 185 x 20 reps.

I'd also like to be a solid 185-190, right now I'm at 170-175. I've gotten that big before but never with any kind of cardio. I'd like to see this weight by the end of the year.

Jiu Jitsu goal: complete in a national competion and make it past my first match sometime this year.

I make alot of stupid mistakes when i roll, but i guess its cuz im new. So my next goal is to be more accurate w/ all my subs. Also drill the hell out of escapes.

I talked with Eddie but I am not one to say or post that here. That is up to the master himself. I think it would be inappropriate if I started mentioning names to be honest. Eddie has several other brown belts that aren't well know "like Chambers and Einstein" but that are super good, so it could be from that pool of guys as well.

As for Aoki, he isn't one of Eddie's students..he just using the system and Eddie has showed him some stuff.

BJJ ranks are different in many ways. Like I posted in another thread, the black belt is BJJ is seen much different that a BB in other styles. Basically, a black belt in BJJ is seen as an expert while a black belt in say JJJ means " One who has begun the journey."

Since Eddie has moved on to his own sub style, I can't seen JJ Machado or anyone else giving him anymore rankings in BJJ. Besides, all ranks above black belt in BJJ are just honorific titles. You don't learn "more moves' but rather "develop your style" better.

Mike:

Are you comparing this based on TIME spent doing the art (say 4-6 years to get a purple belt) or some other criteria? It is very hard to compare belts across different styles because they each teach a specific skill set. However, if you base it on "time spent doing an art', then that makes sense.

Well time, and Also at Purple belt you're generally excepted as an adequate instructor. as you know a BJJ purple belt can run an academy like a Shodan from other styles, etc.

I've gained 6 pounds in 2 weeks but I feel good. I do not know if I am just a super responder to creatine or if it is a convergence of everything.

My lifts and jiu jitsu endurance is improving also.

Drastically reducing my caffeine intake and increasing my water intake is probably part of it. I've done this due to not wanting to counteract the creatine.

I’m thinking it is a convergence of everything coming together. Dad even asked me “You aren’t taking steroids are you?” I said “Hell no, I too big a chicken you know I’m scared of needles and oral steroids will kill you.”

The elephant ears I had when I took the kids to the county fair yesterday were probably a step backwards. :D

Anybody interested in how an OLD man with crappy Jiujitsu skills trains. If so do you want me to post my training journal in a seperate thread here.

I plan to increase my BJJ training from 2-3 to 4 nights a week as long as my body holds up. Weights two days a week (basic push pull split). Sunday morning I do up-hill sprints at the park behind our sub-division. …… Those suck.

I am 5'11"-6'1" (if I straighten my posture and stretch tall) and weight in at about 120-125. I know that sounds freakishly thin, but my looks are deceiving, people usually think I'm about 20-30 pounds more.
I recently moved to Cancun from Dallas. The difference in foods along with new microbes(nothing that sends me running to the bathroom, just a common weird feeling in my stomach) made me drop some weight. In Dallas I was 130-135.
This makes it obvious that one of my goals is to GAIN WEIGHT. I wanna be about 140-145, which is the highest I've ever been, but its trick to get to, let alone stay at.
I am a very technical and flexible JJ player, but I have a very hard time on larger and stronger opponents and I commonly go against people nearly 100#s more than me. I wanna add some brute strength to my game. The only weight I've ever been able to gain is muscle, so every pound is a little bit closer.
So I'll keep forcing myself to eat a lot and exercise. I don't want to lose any of my crazy flexibility to new muscle either, so also lots and lots of stretching.

Wish me luck

I would strongly advise against asking anyone at GNC anything about supplements. You know what they will tell you what works the best? High-commission supplements like Muscletech and BSN products. They will tell you that by far "Cell-Tech" is the best Creatine product on the market.

I would go to a personal trainer/nutritionist or someone like that who is more knowledgeable about what you need instead of someone trying to sell you a brand product.

I remember being 16-17 and buying Cell-tech/Nitro-tech combo for "great gains". What a waste of money. So, through trial and error I am finding that Optimum Nutrition Whey protein gets the most industry awards. I take a pharmaceutical brand of multi-vit/mineral and pharm. brand calcium

The cost of living is way high, doesn't leave a lot of extra cash for eating extra junk on a regular basis.
Warmest alohas on your journey, bruh.

If you're trying to lose weight...throw on a gi. Its like your own mini sauna! Seriously, its starting to heat up a little bit here and the last two classes have been HOT. I'm a little dude (130lbs) and have been going home with my kimono feeling like a used beach towel from all the sweat.

To beat my friend Jared in about 50% of our sparring matches is my first goal. (He weighs 220 while I weigh only 175, and he also has a years more experience)
I'm getting closer and closer to this goal! Although he still has much better sweeps and takedowns.
My second goal is to be able to do the lotus within the next 6 months...
As of now, I can't even get my knees to the ground while doing that one groin stretch, but hey, I've only been training for about 2-3 months now.

Anybody interested in how an OLD man with crappy Jiujitsu skills trains. If so do you want me to post my training journal in a seperate thread here.

Bro, I'm definitely interested in that. You can post it here, on a new thread, in a private message, or whatever you want. I'm all ears, partner!

As for my goals, I want to get back to a hundred pushups in a minute by Christmas. Haven't been able to do it in 14 months because I was stupid and stopped for eight months. (what a dickhead I am)

GOALS:

1. weight - currently at 205, goal weight is 190... looking to achieve that by mid october.

2. flexibility - hurdler stretch: knee on ground, nose to knee... butterfly stretch: knees down, chest to ankles.

3. BJJ belt quest: blue belt in less than a year (Sept 2010)

battle plan: continue current diet, <1500 calories daily, NO MORE BEER.. for now. stretch 3-4 days per week, concentrating on areas that need the most work (legs/hips.) BJJ - 3-4 times per week, attempt blue belt test in 6 months.

other life goals: decide on a damn engagement ring and ask the preggo GF to marry me... get some kind of financial advisor to map out financial plans for baby/family's future... continue training at work and move up at least one position in 1 year.

*phew*

wish me luck, fellas LOL

My goals are to finish my personal trainer certification by the end of July, and increase my weight to 200lb in another 6 months, and to submit my buddies 9/10 times whenever we roll.:D

I have achieved 2\3. I can submit my buddies at will and I finally finished my trainer course.:D The course took a little longer than I thought but better late than never.

This thread was started a year and a half ago. For those of you that are still around, how are your training goals coming along? Any updates or new goals from some of our newer members?

Here are some new ones for me:

1. Get back down to 205 lbs. I was pushing 235 until I realized that I didn't really look very athletic. I was looking kinda pudgy in my face and tummy. I am back down to 215 currently, and the main kicker for me has been not eating late, eating less, and more cardio.

2. Bench 200 lbs. For my size, I should be able to bench more. But for some reason, (my guess is my 3 foot arms), my bench is stuck around 185 lbs. :o

I started a training blog (the day before I got my double promotion, ironically enough). I put it on the Jiujitsuforums board- not because I like them better than you or anything; every MA board I frequent has a blog function of some sort, I just liked the way that particular blog system is set up. Anyway, one of my main goals was/is to stay for the post-class open mat unless I have work or some other very important commitment. I think I learn more on the open mat sometimes than I learn in class, but it's easy to get lazy... by the time class is over, I'm exhausted and sweaty and want to go get out of that skanky gi, have a shower and a Dr Pepper. I told myself that if I'm really too wiped to do any more than watch, I'll just watch- but I have to STAY. More often than not, someone will wind up chivvying me off the bench even if I'm not really into it. I've been doing pretty well with that goal over the last month.

Another of my goals is to get a sub on Leah. I don't expect that to happen anytime soon, but someday it will happen. And when it does, I am going to celebrate.

Likewise I intend to someday have a spar against "Nemesis" in my kung fu class that is not a complete and utter rout. I don't have to sub him, or even clobber him... all I want is to have a spar with him that does not consist of me being 100% owned by him from start to finish. Again, I don't expect this soon... but someday.

One of my kung fu teachers is holding me hostage over the state of my Bung Bo Kuen form. He thinks it's just not up to snuff, and he won't let me learn any more forms until this one meets his standards. ("I know you're capable of more,"... man, I hate it when he starts doing that) I am dying to start working on Hurricane Hands, so I really want to get this out of the way. I performed it for the senior student on Thursday, and his response was "Holy Sh1t", which I find hopeful. I'm going to try to trot it out for the instructor this coming Thursday.

As for me.....I am shamed. Thanks for reminding me.
I shall go grumble a bit and get back to work.

i am now at 188 lbs... hovering right around that mark, give or take a pound or two. ive noticed that since my weight has come back down to a resonable level and my cardio has VASTLY improved, my metabolism has shot through the roof. i can get away with eating some 'not so healthy' items once in a while... months ago a burger would have added 3 lbs and lots of flab for at least a day... now, it doesnt even show when i get up to leave the restaurant!

had my first beer in 3 months the other night. sweet jesus that tasted good... not going to make a habit of it, though.

flexibility is slowly, but surely coming along... blue belt by next year seems completely do-able. i hear my instructor yelling, 'good job, rick... nice transition, rick... way to sink it in there, rick...' now, rather than the 'what are you doing? get out of that... youre giving it up...' from when i first started. makes rolling that much more fun and i crave it SO much more when the positive reinforcement is present.

this site has helped more than i ever thought a forum could. you guys have kept me motivated and accountable for my progress... thanks...

seriously.

thats a good goal, but i challenge you to elaborate on it a little...

what belt are you now? what belt do you want to get to and how long are you giving yourself to get there? are there certain techniques you want to master, or just polish up a little? etc...?

give yourself some measurable goals so that we can prod you into reaching them and you can celebrate when you do.

You should try powerlifting, I got a 250lb when I was 176lb, at a powerlifting comp about a year or two ago.

Powerlifting is the way to go :D and you can do it without overtraining if you know how to.

Sometimes, I find myself just swimming in the ocean. No particular place to go but just enjoying the journey.

At other times, I am shattering the bonds and shackles other men have put on me. Eat Crow...life is good...and getting better.

Just saying....and thank you to all you people here. I really appreciate you.

Sounds like another good way to keep on track. I'll put up a few goals.

1. Monthly - Increase strength and endurance in grappling and sparring sessions.
2. 6 months - Place in a grappling tournament.
3. 1 year - Compete in a amateur MMA match.

Alright, I might as well join in. My main goal right now is weight loss. I am down to 218-220 from 260 last July. I am up to running 3 miles on a normal basis, and as difficult as it may be, to calm down on the weight training. (Benching 300+ is good enough. I guess short arms ARE good for something.) I just started jujitsu, so I would have to say my next goal is to pick up and get better on the basics. IE; guard escape, guard work, transitions, and some submissions. That will include stretching to improve my flexibility. I am spending between 20-30 minutes after each workout stretching. (I really want to get into the 10th Planet Style. Anyone know if there is anyone doing 10th Planet in Atlanta?) There are not really any competitions over here, so all I can do is work. That goes for my stand up as well. So I would say next goal is to get back into stand up. That should cover it for now. Updates to follow.

Short term- Compete in the next 3 grappling (gi and nogi) competitions that are coming up.

Long term- Increase my strength to a respectible 180kg squat (160kg atm), 120kg bench (110kg atm), 200kg deadlift (150kg atm) while weighing 75kg or under (80kg atm). Also shed some of the fat I'm currently holding, I'm at 80kg atm, probably 14% bodyfat, wanna get down to 10-12%.

My goals:
- Achieve my blue belt in BJJ.
- Earn a gold medal in a grappling tournament in my weight class.
- Get (and win) my first MMA fight.

One of my most sought after goals I will be achieving this week. I'm going to defensive tactics instructor school, so I will be a certified DT instructor for my police department. Next month, I'll have the opportunity to go to a police academy and apply my knowledge and help teach the new recruits in that respective class. I'm very excited.

other goals remain the same. I would love to get my blue belt within a year.
