Hurt my rib last night. I was attempting a triangle and got stacked and then the guy came down on me hard and I felt something bad in my ribs. Went to the doctor and no broken bones so probably just a contusuin or partial dislocation. Anyone ever have this type of injury? Dr said I should be out for 2-3 weeks.

As a side note the guy outweighed me by about 80lbs. Sometimes I don't feel like I get alot out of rolling w/ guys that outweigh me by that much. Maybe I'm just being a bitch b/c I got hurt but even when I roll w/ people of higher belts that are closer to my weight I feel like I get more from it.

Yep. I got thrown ( Uchi Mata ) real real hard and even with a breakfall managed to screw myself up. My ribs were smashed, but not broken. It was extremely tender for about three months afterwards and affected my ability to roll. I think that only time will heal that one.

Good Luck!!! A little bit of time off will prevent serious injury down the road.

broken ribs numerous times from mtn. biking and kick boxing, couple dislocations from rolling

what i've learned?

if you think it hurts now, just wait till about 5-6 days after, weirdest thing, they really don't hurt till after, and then the pain sets in big time

as for rolling with heavier guys, i see your point, i roll with one guy who has 70-80 lbs on me, and not fat lbs either, he is almost heavy enough to sumbit me by pressing on my chest from mount, and in side mount he is a beast

it has forced me to learn how to deal with heavier guys:

a. don't be in guard with them
b. if you are, butterfly i find helps take the effect of the weight difference away
c. get out of there as fast as you can
d. gain weight

for him, he has to work more of his game than just side control if he is going to progress and he knows it, working his go to move of an americana over and over again may be fine with someone you outweigh and outmuscle, but when he gets in with someone more his size he will need more skills in order to be successful

i've messed my ribs up a few times and the best advice i can give is to take it easy for awhile. i started rolling again a week and a half later thinking it was pretty much healed. the next morning i woke up feeling worse than I was when it initially happened. it really set me back as far as recovery time goes. when you get back to rolling take it really easy at first and feel stuff out to make sure you're really healed. nothing is worse than waiting 2 weeks to roll then finally getting a chance to, only to have to take another 2 weeks off. good luck dude.

To avoid getting stacked or injured while being stacked you should watch some of the videos on Sub101 in the sweeps & escapes section. Dont try to hold on too much to triangles when you see they are not working immediatley against much bigger opponents. It could be futile.

yea i ahte rolling with anyone who's got more than 30 pounds on me which sucks cuz i'm 14 and the smallest guy in our gym:( i have more success with people who are my size but are lightyears ahead of me in bjj than a 200 pound guy who's only been doing bjj for a month

staying off the mats is probably a good idea, but if the rib's not broken i'd say it's a good idea to do some good workouts to "pump the injury through" as pavel puts it. kettlebells work great but if you haven't got any then do pull-ups. anything to get those muscles in between your ribs working even a little bit would be good. check out the downward dog in the stretching section of mastering the rubber guard. while this will decrease the time the injury causes you any pain, still take your doctors advice and stay the hell away from any live rolling for at least a couple weeks. drill to stay fresh, but don't push yourself.

get well soon! :)

Thanks for the feedback. I am going to stay away from live rolling for a few weeks. I guess I'll try to slowly start exercising to try to keep up some cardio.

I agree that I need to let the triangle go sooner if its failing. I still have a problem from there. Try some kind of feet on hips sweep? Like the sweep on sub101 when someone stacks your rubberguard? again thanks and it will be hard to sit out but I need to be smart about coming back

from triangle it is easy to transition to armbar or omoplata like this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=M9hpsxvrb-s

Thanks for the link! I have transitioned to the armbar but never omoplata. I need work with that. I like the transition between the 3 attacks so that you can counter whatever your opponent does. When O got hurt though I was completely stacked w/ my knee up to my chin

theres drills for when sum1 is trying to stack u to pass but it is very difficult to describe since theres alot of small details but basically u dont wanna get up on ur neck so maybe hook a leg with ur hand and turn ur bodyslightly sideways so its not directly on ur neck?
