I have heard from many people that the fight between Dan Henderson and Rampage will NOT be for the title. Please don't tell me that UFC is going to be like Pride and allow their people to hold belts by not defending them.

Dana White: Dan Henderson vs. Quinton Jackson’s UFC 75 Bout Will Unify Belts

Posted by UFC Junkie on July 9, 2007 at 2:26 pm ET
The UFC 75 main event between UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson (27-6 MMA, 2-0 UFC) and PRIDE welterweight (183-pound) and middleweight (205-pound) champion Dan Henderson (22-5 MMA, 2-0 UFC) will unify the two organizations’ 205-pound belts.

UFC President Dana White clarified the status of the fight during this past weekend, and UFCjunkie.com (www.ufcjunkie.com) confirmed the news with one of the fighter’s camps earlier today.

UFC 75 takes place Sept. 5 at The 02 arena in London.

This latest news contradicts earlier reports from the Orange Country Register (which reported that no belts will be on the line) and Sherdog.com (which reported that just the UFC belt will be on the line).

Jackson, a former PRIDE fighter who transitioned into the UFC earlier this year, picked up the light-heavyweight belt by defeating longtime champ Chuck Liddell at UFC 71. Prior to the championship bout, Jackson made his Octagon debut at UFC 67 and defeated Marvin Eastman with a second-round technical knockout.

Henderson, a U.S. Olympic Greco-Roman wrestler, won the UFC 17 tournament in 1998 before heading overseas for a successful career in PRIDE. After winning the organization’s welterweight title, he scored an upset of Wanderlei Silva at PRIDE 33 earlier this year to pick up the middleweight belt, as well. (Unlike the UFC, PRIDE’s middleweight division is for 205-pounders.)

UFC owners Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta purchased PRIDE earlier this year, and since then, the Japanese-based organization has been in a state of limbo. White even went as far as calling the status of the business “a mess,” and with numerous PRIDE fighters being signed to UFC contracts, it’s remains unknown if an event will be held under the PRIDE name anytime soon.

Great! I suppose that is why the PRIDE ww champ was there too! I would like to see all belts united into just the UFC brand belt. I would like all 155s to go together with some in WEC and the others in UFC. Those who prefer rings can go to Bodog, K1 or IFL. Put Featherweights in WEC and put the Pride Fighters in the UFC named weight classes. I think they should allow Dan Henderson to pick a weight classs and stay in it. Give 1 belt per person. Not keen on idea of having 2 belts for 1 person..... limits amounts of title fights. I would rather see Henderson 205

Yea the one thing I really dont like with having 2 belts in seperate weights is you can only fight so much and it would but divisions on hold as well as contenders just waiting for fights

Can you imagine if Henderson got injured? He theoretically could be out for a year and not defend EITHER belt. Then they'd have to strip both belts from him and have a tourney to decide the winner of each belt. Not very good in my eyes.

Is the death of Pride coming? Shame.

Ari, you may not like my opinion but I can't seem to get into Pride. Honestly, I am not a big fan of a ring. I hate when watching a fight and they get too close to the ropes that everyone has to jump up and hold the ropes together. I like the cage because you can use it more in the fights and I think its safer for the fighter. Imagine how your neck would feel getting driven back like Franca was Saturday and your head hitting the rope and causing a whiplash effect whereas a cage is stationary. Also, I like in UFC how a champ never fights without the belt on the line unless they don't make weight.

Ryan:

I agree with you about the ring and what you said about fights not for belts ( I hate that too).

What I find to be "a shame" is that Pride has MANY fantastic fighters. The UFC is only so big and it can only have so much talent. There has to be another LARGE organization to house these other top names.

I don't like the fact the the UFC could squash the other competition out. It reminds me of what the WWE did to the WCW years back.

Although, I think that BODOG (who has FEDOR) and ELITEXC have some great GREAT cards and are getting bigger and better.

It will be interesting to see how it all turns out.

I like Dana. He seems like a guy that knows what he wants. I have to admit that I am not thrilled about having a stacked UFC. I guess this is why I wouldn't mind having a WEC vs UFC type atmosphere. Why not Pride vs UFC? Simple. Pride is in a ring while UFC is in a cage. Whoever lost would have complaints out the ass. The only bad thing is, is that UFC would need a featherweight division.

Hello Ryan. I have to politely disagree with you. As a fighter I think that the cage is great. However, the ring makes mma more acceptable to a broader audience that still thinks its a human cockfight. When the typical male age 18-35 hears "cagefighter", he thinks of the UFC. Anyone outside of that thinks of barbarians killing each other in some secret pit. So for the record, I only partially disagree with you. I guess I am passive aggressive. lol.

I tend to agree that people outside the MMA fanbase thinks a cage is barbaric. The only thing I have to say about this really is that I guess I am just not overly concerned about acquiring fans who use the words "barbaric" to classify Cagefighters. People who use these words to label this sport will never be fans, even in a ring they won't be fans. See, when they call UFC "Human Cockfighting" they are being closed minded. Its like a football player calling a soccer player "a grass fairy". The football player who says this is ignorant because football players spend more time on the grass then the soccer players. Also, with that terminology the football player is closed minded and wouldn't give soccer the time of day needed to change their minds.
