Knife Defense = RUN!

If you wanna get crazy do some Krav Maga and Jeet Kun Do also deals with this fairly well.

Darryn:

Having been a doorman/cooler/bouncer for the last 12 years, there are some things you have to take into consideration.

1) Does the club you work at provide vests
2) Is the club you work at a shit hole and if so, are you really getting paid enough to work there
3) Educate yourself with reading material (The Doorman's Credo and the Bouncer's Bible)
4) Knife fights almost always end up with one guy being cut.
5) If a guy wants to shank you, he AIN'T going to show the blade.
6) Training is RBSD (reality based self defense) is crucial. You’ve gotta train over and over to get that hard wired.
7) Use any type of weapon available to you if a weapon is presented.
8) Make sure the person in question does not get up from the attack. Have one of your boy's move around him and hit him with a fire extinguisher.
9) RUN if you can.
10) If you can't run, kill the delivery device. In other words, make sure you grab on the arm with both hands and keep the knife from going into you. Use your body and weight to keep it bound up. Head butt and kick the groin as hard as you can. Break the arm or elbow if given the chance.
11) Repeat # 8

Hope that helps

Ari- something I see all the time in movies is that people being attacked with a knife will take off their shirt and try to have the knife get caught up in the shirt and the perp drop the knife or the knife stick in the shirt. What is your take on that? Is it just Hollywood theatrics or is there some intellligence to it? Thanks.

Ryan:

About 6 years back, I was working the door when some patron pulled a knife on one of my doorstaff. The bouncer took off his bomber jacket and wrapped it around the his arm. The main reason for this is to act as a make shift shield. I don't think the knife would get caught up in the jacket, but it would help protect the person a bit more.

So...I have seen it with my own eyes. I'd prefer to have both of my hands available to grasp and punch, but to each their own.

Or, best option...#8 (see above)...wink

cheers

Thanks Ari. That makes sense. You never know when something in the movies was a proven technique or just for theatrical show so I thought I would ask someone who knows the scene inside and out. #8 is a great option and would be quite effective. Why fight fair when you can fight smart?:D
