Hey, what's up everybody. I just started this site, so far seems awesome! Anyways I just got out of the marines I got injured in Iraq last year, almost had my leg amputated but luckily was able to keep it, anyways I love grappling but was mostly good with my legs, now my right leg isn't that functional and wanted to see if anyone has any ways to better myself in this subject by using my upper body more at this point? Thank you much appreciated!

Dear Marine:
First off, thank you for your sacrifice and serving your nation. While I happen to be Canadian, I have much respect for those who serve in the armed forces. Again, Thank You!
You'll have to change up your game plan now that your leg is no longer what it used to be. This fact will change the way you grapple and approach grappling. JJ Machado only has the use of one hand (the other hand is missing 3 fingers). His JJ is sick because he had to apapt to using a different game plan (hence the reason he got so good no gi..no handles to hold on to..he starting using under and over hooks).
I could sit here and tell you what to do but it would make any sense. Listen to yoru body. Experiment will some buddies and see what positions you have a really tough time with. Play around with your technique. Be creative in your jiu jitsu. Holding guard will probably be a probelm now. Work butterfly, sweeps, cross side...
Good luck an WELCOME to the BOARD!
cheers

Ari, good suggestions. I always say that you can tell the magnitude of a man by not what he was before but who he was after adversity. With you, your certainly a real man that can handle adversity. You came home a different person but your willing to adapt and make yourself a better person by coping with your condition instead of giving up. Thank you for serving. Greatly appreciated. My suggestion. Do what Ari says. He is a great guy and with you learning to adapt to your new condition you may become a better BJJ practicioner or who knows.... maybe the BJJ work will do wonders for your leg.

First off I would like to aside from thanking you for service this country send you a Marines Shirt on the house.
Please PM me here or email BrazilianJiuJitsuGear@yahoo.com telling me where to ship & what size.
I am happy they did not have to amputate your leg and your positive attitude is a true sign of how strong a person you are.
This is one way to make your JJ unique so that its a style all your own.
I dont have any specific advice but I would experiment with different positions and see where you feel strongest.
Thank you for joining the site and its a pleasure to have an Purple Heart American Hero on board!!!
