As many of you know, last week I got my first taste of Jiu-Jitsu in an actual dojo setting. I came back to you all with a long list of problems I encountered. Last week I had some sloppy shots and had left my neck out. I gassed out quite regularly and I had trouble in side control.

Each week I will come in here and document my experience. You all can comment suggestions or common stories and this will be a good thread to assist anyone just starting out or crossing over sports.

In week 2, things were much better. I slowed down and didn't gas. I took my time and thought things through. Granted, I still got caught a lot and made stupid mistakes but I learned and I did 1 thing better which helped my game.

My mistakes were first that I didn't stretch well enough and my groin is kinda sore.

Second I pulled guard without controlling my opponent and my guard was passed. I adjusted halfway through class and did MUCH better. I went for quick subs and got caught because I didn't go for position first.

Third, when I shot in I set up my single legs a lot better and actually got in really good position a few times. One major cause of celebration is that I took him down, tried the RNC and he turtled up. I remembered what Eddie said and I purposely rode high and went for the arm bar...... getting my very first tap.

Congrats on the first tap, and the thing I love most about your post is you found your problem with everything you thought you may have done wrong, and adjusted them & learned. Good job!

Thank you. I am blessed to have a class with guys who are willing to answer questions, stop and ask me if I can feel what move they are setting up for and how I plan to escape. I have guys showing me different Judo set ups and everyone is so helpful.

Eric- Thank you. I am going to use this journal to document my progress in my transition from combat sport to combat sport and hopefully show other newbies that success is possible through perseverence, dedication and hard work. I am getting my ass handed to me most of the time but I am working through and learning. I also want to show that you aren't going to know 3-4 moves every practice and that it is indeed a slow process.

congrats on getting your first tap!! it's a great feeling isn't it?

As much as the forum is a nice place for info i think 30 minutes on the mat beats 30 hours on the forums. IE on the forum it says be patient and position before position, and don't go for subs early and lose position in the heat of the moment it is so easy to let all you know from the forums go in a second and just get sub happy. Good luck and with time on the mat you will just get better and better and i can't wait to see how you do in a few months

Ok, so, I am stuck between a rock and a hard place. My classes are on Thursday and I don't stop hurting until about Tuesday or Wed. This week for instance my hand throbs, shoulders are tight and I have been limping a lil from a pulled groin. I hate that feeling because I really enjoy running, working out and other sports. Does it get easier? If I had previous shoulder problems and those problems are coming back and going away each week should I be worried? Its like I get better just in time to go in and get hurt again.

Any advice?

your hand throbs? you do Gi or No-Gi? your hand might cramp if you grab onto cloth too much but if you do no-gi then I am baffled

Just think back to your days as a wrestler when your glutes hurt from practicing shooting for an hour. Or how sore your back and neck felt from bridging. You eventually get used to it and your body adapts (less and less the older you get). Plus if you are like me you have sat in class in High School in a sauna suit with 4 sweatshirts on, IMO if you can mentally deal with that you can deal with anything. Good Luck.

im a lil over a month in i train 3 to 4 times a week, i dont get sore anymore. one thing i try to do is stretch before class becuase depending on who is running the warmups might not even stretch during it. pulled my groin 2nd night tryin to throw a leg triangle up, i just sat out and watched the next night and resumed training again the following night.

That's where the stretching and yoga comes in. :D

soreness and pain, I've always stretch it out like crazy. Hope the shoulder heals up.

Top man Ryan!! Great posts!! :)

Have you Tried the "Frozen Towel Technic" on your shoulder? Might help speed up the healing process.

hey man, make sure you do a good stretch at the end of your session cos it will make a big difference. also if you gas early you may be too tense while rolling. i know a guy thats really fit but used to gas within minutes of getting on the mat. he was always real tense. make sure you're real relaxed. all the best fighters stay relaxed in competition. im lovin the journal, keep it up!

Thank you. Plan on going back in a few weeks. Going to order some shorts as well.... Got any Tom?

I am not sure what you mean by tense? Do you mean breathing? Rigid, straight body?

I know my partners have been telling me to breathe more regularly. They said they can tell when I am about to bust out some power because I hold my breath and just go for it.

Thats kinda what he means by tense.

One thing I do and also teach people to do is when you are rolling, you should still be able to have a conversation.

That is how you gauge if you are rolling to tense.

yeah thats what i mean, but also if you are rigid or trying to use strength rather than technique you'll be too tense as well.

thats great advice about being able to have a conversation while rolling. i like that!

yeah, we can't hold conversations when rolling because 99% of the guys are going "full go" during the sparring section of class.

Wherein the problem lies. Even if no one else is slowing it down, don't be afraid to be the exception. Your jits will improve because of it.

+1 Good Advise IMHO...

BTW Try To Stretch Whenever You Can. And Try To Control Your Breathing And Keep It Steady Throughout Your Roll. I Know It's Hard And It Took Me A Long Time To Learn How To Do So Myself, But When I Was Able To I Had More In The Tank Than My Opponent/Partner.

Have you ever used Polar Ice? Slap some on soon soon as you get to lay down after practice. Wear a sweat shirt. Also getting into a really hot tub and pouring rubbing alcohol in works wonders for for soarness. Sit for 30 minutes and sweat it out.

Since I got my job back at the Pharmacy I have been working late 2nd shift so I haven't been able to go to class.

What I will start doing until I can start training again is to get in shape. I should have been doing that anyway. So, my plan is to get in shape and look for an opportunity to train whether it be at a gym with classes or through friends. Maybe I could talk a guy from the class into coming to the gym early and working with me.
