hey guys i am new to jiu jitsu. i have had about a month of training in it. me and my friends have fight nights. i am 2-1. first win by RNC, second win by wristlock. i lost to a head scissors, it came out of nowhere. i went for an americana in the begining, but i couldn't get it. are there any tips to pulling it off? i was in his guard and i stayed low on him. i had trouble bending his arm 90 degrees. any advice?

Puh difficult to say without seeing what you have done exactly...
It depends how your position and the position of your friend was.

Is there someone more experienced watching over you guys? Not that I am bashing you or anyone else, but most injuries come from people with very little knowledge messing around with friends.

You don't go for armlocks when you're in someone's guard. Americana is normally done from side control or mount.

the americana is very hard to get, almost impossible in someone's guard. if you could get the mount, weigh down on him and then lock, it should work. And if he rolls you can still get several other moves if you can keep his arm. This is my experience with it.
edit: fork you beat me by a minute ;)

My advice, don't try arm subs from the guard. :-D

As all the guys above me said, don't go for submissions while in guard. Always try and get position before submission. While in guard, you don't have the power of leverage to pull of the Americana (key lock/ude garami).
Are you guys 'self taught'?

It cannot be stressed enough...
position before submission.
position before submission.
position before submission.
position before submission.
position before submission.

Last person that went for the americana on me while being in my guard, got his back taken and recieved the twister from me. So the lesson is getting the position first
No ****. This is day one or day two lesson material. No need to stress it. If someone does know it then they are not in the game.

for bigger or stronger guys americana is like the number 1 submission, ive ben tapped by alot of bigger guys via americana, its rlly hard to defend if they can get even half guard then its just a matter of them putting their weight or their strength against you and isolating ur arm, as you get more experiance it gets easier to defend unless ur dead tired

First, if someone attempts an americana from guard it's easy to spin out of it.
Once in side control or mount, you need to isolate one arm so you have a 2 on 1 situation.
Alot of people try to just bend the arm upwards, but you need to sink in the attack. You do this my turning their wrist like you're revving a morocycle. Once you rotate the arm, pull down and you should get a tap.
