View Full Version : Which type of mat to buy for practicing?
Ari.. I'm not sure on which type of mats I should buy for jiu-jitsu / wrestling related exercises. I don't really know what to look for, as in key features and all.. and what type of mats I should be getting.. I'm sure it's not the same as the ones that kids use to play since their too thin.. but then again, I'm not sure.. =/

Andy:
There are many types of mats out there. I use the 40" x 40" x 1-3/4" (thick)puzzle mats at my place and they've worked great and run about 35 bucks a mat. Tatami runs about 200 per mat (3 feet by 6 feet). Swain makes mats too.
You can buy them wholesale from martial art stores (they have to be big enough) or order online:

Thanks Ari! =]
One more thing.. I think you're doing great on the new site features.
I really like how you're showing a new video every 2 days and all.. I think it's a good idea. Thanks again Ari =]

The grappling mats are a bit softer and don't give you mat burn like the traditional tatami mats I have the scars on my feet to prove it).
I think, for JJ, the puzzel ones are the best bang for your buck.

I picked up some mats from Walmart. They are 2' x 2' x 1/2". They are not as thick as the ones the guys mentioned, but for rolling they are good. 6 come in a pack & they were $11 or so.

I went to 2 different one's. They are your basic mats, nothing special. They are good for grappling & that's about it. No throws or anything where you can catch speed & hit the ground hard.
