View Full Version : Groin Guards?
I've been having a major problem recently with people wearing groin guards. Fair enough you wanna protect your balls, but when someone wears one and uses it to tap you out, isn't that use of a foreign object to aid a submission and meant to be illegal? I don't know if it is, but it's really pissing me off.
Yesterday I got caught in a triangle, and I was defending it properly, it wasn't choking me at all. However, this guy was wearing a groin guard and the pressure of the hard plastic against my cheek forced me to tap. I felt like my cheek was gonna explode but considering it's called a Triangle Choke and not a fucking Triangle Hard Plastic to break cheekbone Hold, it just really got on my nerves. It's the same with armbars. They add extra pain to the submission and I think they suck!
Now, fair enough I shouldn't be getting caught in these, but ffs what's the point of learning how to defend a submission if Im tapping out to them using, IMO, a weapon of sorts.
What are your opinions on this?

for tourneys....
wear them.. everyone else is so don't disadvantage yourself.
in class... I hate hard cups, its bad for your partner and reinforces bad technique..
I wear a soft rubber one. It protects me well enough most of the time.
furthermore lots of old judo guys swear hard cups are dangerous that you can damage your jewels with them if they're out of place when you take a good fall.

I agree. The cup makes armbars significantly easier to attain, but if you cannot get one without the cup, you are definately lacking some details in your technique.

then stop pulling the arm on your package.. use your hip bone... the crease on either side of your junk and the leg
I've never worn a cup in my life and I manage to get armbars properly. Fair enough you wanna protect your balls but as virginiamma has said, wear a rubber one.

As far as training goes Jay, and that triangle you dealt with, I have done countless reps and been put in countless triangles with guys who all had cups on. I've never had an issue with the cup smashing my face. I would imagine if they have your arm properly pulled to the side, this shouldn't be the issue. But again, I'm just a white belt as well, so what do I know.
Actually the general concensus is in many forums, that guys are more worried of there NOT being a cup on, as they dont want to be that close to their partner's package. The cup makes them feel more at ease, you know afraid of looking gay or something...
Well, if they're afraid at looking gay then they're doing the wrong sport. You don't wanna roll around on mats with other sweaty men if you are afraid of looking gay.
My arm when it happened was not across my face. I was defending the choke as shown, and I was not in danger of being choked out. Well, I was, but I was escaping. Had it of been a tournament I would of continued escaping, but I don't really want someone to crush my cheekbone just for ego purposes. So I tapped.

Not to sound cruel but if being tapped by that bothers you it might be time for an ego check. If you really were escaping then you should be able to take the pain long enough to escape. I have found (the hard way) that its just better to tap when someone has got you instead of risking injury. Practice is just that, practice... it's where you make mistakes, learn from them and not worry about being tapped.
Ego check? No. I tapped. End of the day, thats not having an Ego. What bothers me is that he tapped me out by using a hard plastic object to inflict pain on me. That's not jiu jitsu.
I didn't say I was escaping it. I was defending it. When I defend chokes, I am not getting choked. It gives me time to escape the situation.

It would piss me off too!!! But then it only seems like one of those freak situations that don't happen too often and when they do happen they are just that: sporadic freak situations (just like accidentally pinching skin when gripping an opponents arm/gi).
(mind you no one I roll with wears a cup so I have no idea how often that kinda thing would happen)
Cups are illegal according to IBJJF rules.

CEB...you did return...I knew it:).
As for cups, I've never worn one in my life. I've been whacked a few times but since I don't wear a cup all the time (I do know a JJJ instructor who does..literally), I train without one.
Having a cup grind into your face or used to attain an arm bar sucks. Sure it HELPS but I train (at least I hope) for technique.
The most common mistake by beginners, as virginamma pointed out, is to smash your junk by doing an improper arm bar.
A cup is to protect the groin. What if I have a jacked knee and need to wear one of those heavy duty knee braces (I had a student of mine who needed them. They SUCK.
At any rate....roll at your own risk and realize that everyone plays by their own rules so be prepared for the unpredictable (self defense mindset-right Ed?)
Thank god they're illegal in tournaments. I train for sport, not for self-defense. If someone attacks me in the street, I'm not pulling guard or im getting bottled! Not to hijack my own thread here, haha!
But yeah, you know someone who wears a cup ALL the time? Even in the bath?

Very true, and in competition, if someone complains, as far as I know, they would check into it and penalize, or disqualify guilty parties. I guess maybe I just don't think it is a big deal because I have always trained with people who wear cups (MMA based school)
They don't make cups big enough to hold all my junk so I do not wear one.
Plus it is kind of rude getting hit in the ribs with a hard cup. I don't like to be rude to my friends so I don't wear one .... and you can't wear them in competition anyway.
The soft foam protectors are nice and more comfortable. I don't know if they would be allowed in competitions or not. That would be a good question for Master Carlos.
