View Full Version : The greatest lesson you can learn.
If a purple belt who is going 100% against you gets you in an ankle lock, forget trying to roll out of it, tap. Oops.
On a brighter note, I rolled 15 minutes non-stop against my brown belt instructor, and although he wasn't going 100%, he caught me in loads of submission attempts such as spiderweb, the croc, triangle, omoplata, etc...and I escaped them all! Only to be swept again, but still, I am chuffed to have not been tapped by him!
Thought I'd share my experience! Also, Lucozade Sport does WONDERS for Cardio!

Lucozade? Is that akin to Gatorade?
Lucozade Sport is like...basically Gatorade yes but...with more sugar! Gatorade is better if you're on a strict diet, like, but for pure sugar rush (which is always good for Jiu Jitsu), Lucozade Sport is the way!
It might just be a UK brand, I don't know?
My ankle is okay I guess. It's more of a strain, it hurt a LOT for about 5 minutes and then calmed down enough so that I could roll again. I've put ice on it, and now im treating it to heat. Under the hot water tap (thank god for my wrong technique I did for so long in Muay Thai to deaden the nerves in my instep!), then some Tiger Oil on it and it's feeling better now. I'm sure it'll kill in the morning though!

Wow, MORE sugar than Gatorade?!? It is loaded with sugar. It's what plants crave! It seems to be a UK only brand, though.
I hope your Ankle feels better, Tiger Balm works wonders. Gula, as my Vietnamese wifey calls it. I use loads of the stuff, too, good luck!

.....
Better than a white or blue belt. White belts will hurt you! :D
I would rather fight black and brown belts any day.

My instructors are twice my size, and are 1st and 2nd degree black belts. I tend to get submitted quickly when I roll with them :(
But do they ever hurt you?
The spaz is the most dangerous man in the dojo. :D
You can learn a lot from the dojo spaz because you often have no idea what they are going to do. It keeps you on your toes.

Not trying to burst your bubble but are sure he was trying to submit you? I roll with lesser skilled guys all the time and just get to the point of submitting them but dont complete it so they can escape and move to another position.

Never get hurt by them or any of the browns or purples. They tend to explain stuff as we go along etc helping me out. I love it. I am getting to the stage where I can hang with some of the blue belts now and do very well with the white belts. I only ever get hurt against white belts.
Only other time I tend to say ouch is when we are working on take downs against some of the bigger purples etc.

He was definitely trying to submit me. Obviously not 100% but he usually submits me at least once or twice, but when he locked in the triangle I used Einstein's escape I saw on 10th Planet Watch, where you stand on their biceps. Worked a treat!

if your in and ankle lock or heal hook or any leg lock agaisnt even an advance white belt dont try rolling infact rolling is a terrible defence for leg locks, if someone is very good at leg locks in general its going to be very hard to get out of them because of how fast they come on, the best thing ive found tho for getting out of leg locks is sitting up and grabbing one of the hand with both of my hands, this two on one tecnique seems to work well for me because most people cant do any damage to my legs with one hand on it.. unless thier a complete monster and have 60 pounds of pure strength on me.. but give it a try cuz once you got a grip on the hand its usually pretty easy to slip your leg out. i find rolling just makes it tighter changes the ankle lock to a heel hook.. which is much worse.

Your rolling in the wrong direction then

no im definatly not rolling the wrong direction i know what direction to roll, its just trying to roll against a catch wrestler or anyone with lots of leg lock experiance is suicide, just like JayC said dont try rolling against a purple belt jjbc player cuz your going to get hurt... and ive learned that lesson too. reaching up and grabbing two hands on one of theirs works infanatly better for me and everyone ive showed it too. rolling only works on newbies... and extreamly gassed opponents.

I just try to get as close as I can to them. If we are wearing a gi, I try to grab their lapel, and pull myself in close. I then shove my foot deeper into their arms, like I'm putting on a boot. That puts the pressure on the calf instead of the achilles, and relieves a lot of the pressure. Talking about straigh footlocks here. If it is a heel hook I just tap as soon as I see it go on, I don't fool around with those. But the above steps usually keep it from turning into a heel hook.

I sit up right away, and try to relieve the pressure while I work for the escape, pull hands and arms off, or get my other foot in to push/pry their arms up to escape, then scramble for dominante position.

Never roll out of a straight ankle lock! Put the boot on, and then do the sit up escape to mount.
Rolling (if they have a good leg lace) does infact make it easier to finish the submisison. I actually prefer to finish it inverted.
I have a you tube video of "the grinder" a knee compression counter to a straight ankle lock, if you have difficulties doing the sit up escape.

a toe hold?
Well, to be honest, I'm not sure what it was really, as I was too busy looking away. It basically fucked my ankle up!
