View Full Version : Cutting Weight, need a bit of help!
I'm fighting in a tournament on Sunday, as well as going to Eddie Bravo's seminar tomorrow.
Has anybody got any tips for me cutting weight? I'm fighting at 68kg, and I'm currently 70kg, was 69kg when I woke up. Weigh in is at 10am-12pm, and the fighting starts at 12pm. I'm unsure what time my weight category starts though, it was the last category last tournament.
Anyway, so far today, its 2:30pm, and I've eaten in the morning some rice and tuna, and have just eaten a banana as a snack. Not too much, but enough carbs. I've been drinking a lot of water and pissing a lot out too! Every 5 minutes it's a trip to the bathroom. I need one now too, hold on!
So yeah, my schedule for later is to eat an omlette with cheese in, and then go to Yoga. Tomorrow, I'll be leaving my house at 6am, having a nutri-grain bar, and eating some pasta at around 9:30 when I get to Nottingham. Again drinking lots of water. I will get home at around 7pm after checking out Nottingham University, and then eating a banana for my tea (ill be starving). I will cut out all water from that time onwards, and hopefully I will make the weight the next day at 10am. That leaves me 2 hours to sweat it off if I do not make it.
Does this sound like a good plan for cutting this weight? I sweat a lot in Yoga also and will surely be sweating in the seminar!

Depending on your lifestyle you can lose up to 5 pounds if you completely dehydrate your body 24 hours before weigh ins. Not an an ounce of water. Usually only a gallon of water the day before your 24 hour "breakdown" (as our wrestlers liked to call it). But idk everything I do whether it's fight or tournament I stay at 170 which is what I walk around at because cutting weight sucks
It was either go in the 73kg division and have a beer gut, or cut to 68kg. I've found that my style of Jiu Jitsu works best on guys my size ;)

The diet sounds fine... if you are trying to lose 1kg in 24 hours, that is like a 7000 calorie loss if it were all muscle/fat, so obviously that is going to do it, lol. Cut the water and sweat it out, just like ^^he^^ said. If you are coming up a touch short, go for a sauna.

I'm not in competition but I just seen this in Ultimate Fighter one when Bobby Southworth got to cut 20 pounds to fight Sidone Loncaide... He was locked in the sauna by Chuck Liddell wearing a somewhat neoprene suit...
You could lose that weight then by Sauna.
I have no access to a sauna :) I'd have to sweat it out by hard grit.
Saying that, it's only 2lbs haha!

Generally for a grappling event you have to weigh in just before you wrestle. I would enter the heavier division if I was instead of trying to dehydate yourself. It's not worth doing it if you can't rehydrate afterwards.
I have 2 hours + the time before my category starts! Started about 2 hours after the tournament started last time!
I'm only 2lbs over the category, I'm not gonna enter a category 5kg heavier than me NOW.

The whole cutting weight thing doesn't sit well with me. I don't know a lot about it but dehydrating your body seems unhealthy. It seems as though it would put a big stress and your body.

You know your body better then I do. I hate getting dehydrated. Takes me more then a couple of hours to get to the stage where'd I'd want to compete in 4 or 5 rounds at competition intencity.
instead of eating all of that pasta and other carb sources why don't you try eating things like baby carrots? Not only will they fill you up but they will make you crap a lot. Celery is a negative calorie food. Snack on that. Water is a great idea. Try running for a half hour... also, if you find yourself not able to make weight by a few ounces and can't pee or poo I suggest you stand on your head for 20 seconds and then get on the scale as fast as you can..... it helps trust me
Considering we stand on our heads for about 10 minutes in Yoga, that sounds like no problem. I'll try that out actually, sounds weird!

I'm actually trying to cut some weight as well.
There really isn't a magical solutions to dropping weight. Frankly the only way to lost weight is to lower your calorie intake and increase you calorie output. ie eatting more protein, less carbs and fat. and increasing your workouts.
but if it's the day before the event and you have a little bit of time to rehydrate and eat something, try wearing sweats under your gi (if you do gi)
Also as a high school wrestler, I can say standing on your head for a little bit actually helped a guy lose a half a pound 30mins before the tourney. but then again he was wearing sweats and its was over 90 degrees in the wrestling room.
goodluck bro.

idk about you but when I weigh myself in the morning I'm 5 pounds less than the end of the night... so if thats the case for you - when you wake up just don't eat anything lol
Woke up about 10 minutes ago, its just turned 6am. Weighed myself, and...68!!! WOO!
I should be fine if I eat the baby carrots, vegetables and lower my water intake for tomorrow. And then after weigh in, Im getting Bacon Corn Snacks WOO!

How does standing on your head and then running to the scale make you weigh any different?

Tried it. Weighed exactly the same as before. Anyone else tried it. Am I supposed to wait before I get on the scales? Weighed myself, stood on my head for 30 seconds and weighed myself again. Digital scales. Weighed the same.
Maybe 30 seconds wasn't long enough..... I'm a little rusty. Its been 10 years since my last weigh in. I just know that we used to stand on our heads and when we came down we ran to the scales as quickly as we could and 99% of the time we made weight. Its one of those things I can't explain but something that seemed to work.

How did it go Jay?
Well first, I didn't weigh in. My scales = broken, or something, cause I weighed 68.3kg on my scales.
Get to the tournament...70.5! This was 30 minutes after...no water, no food, nothing! So, bad start, I had to enter -73kg.
Things went well with the first fight, I went against a guy with really big hair: It started with my jumping into half-guard, and within the space of like, 1 second, I swept him with the Boa and passed to mount.
4 points off the bat!
Then...somehow, he put me back into the half-guard...so I just passed again and got 2 more points. This guy was obviously not very good, as he immediately gave me an Arm Triangle...but it was on my weaker side and I was already weak from a combination of nerves and...the pointless "cut".
So that went out the window, and I thought I'd have a go at getting a few more points racked up. I obviously knew I could pass his half-guard at will, he was going crazy with my shoulder pressure so I gave him my leg...and passed again.
This time, he decides to get the underhook...so I let him. Kablam, he's in a Brabo choke, I lock it up, squeeze a bit from sprawl, he doesn't tap. So I turn to my side, sit in, and trap his leg with my leg. He taps, I win.
Next fight was with a guy who was obviously in top shape, he was ripped like a motherfucker! So, it starts with him getting an instant takedown, and I transition straight to New York, and progress to the gogoplata. I don't know WHAT was going on, but...it didn't work :| I couldn't get it, this guy was way explosive and he just broke out of it. So I had to transition to an omoplata which also didn't work, he was too strong and I must have done something wrong, as he postured up SO fast I didn't have time to get the triangle. This led to him getting on top and finishing me Jeff Monson style with a North South choke.
My Jiu Jitsu record is now 3-5, which I'm not too happy about! :(

Maybe you should just get into shape sooner than later next time. Just maintain a weight wherein you can be stronger than most fighters...
Charge it to experience... But its fine. You win some you loss some. Beat asses next time.
Yup, the lessons I learned were:
I'm average at Jiu Jitsu, but that's nothing without PROPER conditioning. I've never been a properly dedicated athlete, until today. I'm gonna start as soon as I can, not cutting the weight, but in fact trying to strengthen myself so a cut to 68 would make me very ripped and take me about a month. Also, HEALTHY cuts down are a LOT better, as proved by a certain Diego "YES" Sanchez on Saturday!
Also, I need to train more. A guy I know who recently got his purple belt (last monday) said I have potential, I just don't go to every class. This is not out of choice, I just can't afford it!
When I come home from California, I hope to be TWICE the level I am at now techniques wise.
