so in training the other day, somebody half-passed my guard so he had his 1 knee across my inner thigh to pass, but my other leg was still outside his legs like normal (hard to explain it writing) anyway it was really uncomfortable, any suggestions to get back to full guard from that position?

When someone does this, I try control their wrists. This means I can put the foot that is not trapped into a butterfly hook, and proceed with a sweep :) Not sure if that's the "official" way to do it, but I find that them putting all their weight on my other leg is basically giving me that sweep.

Either that, or bring your other knee in over their waist., and then push out and try and retrieve guard :)

is he sliding his knee over on the "same side" or is he "crossing" with the knee slide?

different options for both, but assuming he's crossing (since it's more common and more difficult to stop) this video explains the pass a bit and a couple common counters that work pretty well:
