Before I ask my questions let me explain where I stand...

I am practically brand new to training in bjj because I have never trained consistently (money and time being the issue). I now can start training consistently for the first time.

I love the 10th planet system but from what I have read on different forums, you need to have a good understanding of the basic fundamentals of bjj before you can really excel at the 10th planet system. I have read the reason is because much of the system depends on you knowing the basics. Some individuals have said that "Mastering the Rubber Guard" and "Mastering the Twister" are advanced jiu jitsu techniques and require bjj basics as a foundation.

I myself do not have a good understanding of the basics yet. So here is my question... 1.) should I wait until I get a good handle on the basics before I begin to study and apply the 10th planet system or should I focus heavily on the basics but incorporate the 10th planet system into my training slowly from the start?

2.) If I should focus on the basics first, at what point do you feel like a newbie could begin to branch out into the system?

3.) Also, at the 10th planet schools, are the basics taught first or are they blended in with the system from the beginning?

I would appreciate any feedback and detailed opinions as to why you believe what you believe.

I personally didnt get started in anything to do with 10th planet till about 2 years after i started. My dad started learning it from the get go and hes doing just fine with it. I think it depends on how you learn. But know this basics are KEY. Its not the fancy stuff the wins the big competitions its the basics that wins it.

I can't speak to training in a 10P school, but to answer your first question, it has been talked about a few times on here, and I tend to believe that it's a good idea to learn what your dojo has to teach first, then start trying some stuff in free rolls. That being said, there are some really basic things in 10P that I think can be used straight away, the lockdown being one of them.

Where are you located? Close to a 10P gym? I think if you had the option to train at one, that would be your best bet.

one thing i think is interesting, is that 10th planet is not ALL new, remember, eddie has his BB in BJJ, he just added, and tweaked, all the basic laws are still there, he just tried to add more "dead zones" to the game...

I live in Brooklyn, NY. The closest 10th planet is in Rochester about 6 hrs away. I eventually plan on going up their on a monthly basis once I get some things in order.

I've never had a 10th planet class... but you know I have this weird feeling that if you walk into a 10p dojo and say I don't know anything, I'm a complete beginner, I bet they will teach you positioning, arm bar, kimura, etc... lol

you have never had a 10th Planet class, intro or been a first timer...so I can understand your thought and sarcasm. But as a 10th Planet instructor i will tell you what is done at my school
3 intro classes on the path of the Twister , path of HG, path of the RG are given to give direction, a path to follow and familiarity for when the student attends class.

IF A 6 YR OLD CAN DO IT AND WIN TOURNAMENTS IS IT ADVANCED???????

I don't think he was being sarcastic at all. He was just saying that 10pjj is an extension of the basics and to learn 10pjj it might be useful to learn basic Jits so you understand positioning a bit better. Its like in wrestling..... you don't learn the firemans carry before you learn to shoot in to get the firemans carry. You don't learn a half nelson without first learning to break down your opponent. No need to be so sensitive.

I don't think it is fair to minimize a 6 year olds intelligence level. Honestly there are some gifted 6 year olds and some really retarted 30 year olds. Age is just a number. I have also seen teenagers at local high schools with a D in all his classes but attend vocational school and be a 4.0 student. I have also seen college football players have to take AIDS Awareness, golf and music appreciation in order to be eligible for football but at the same time they master a very complex college playbook. If a 6 year old loves Jits then even the most advanced techniques can be learned.

honestly if u practice the moves enough, most of them aren't really very complicated or advanced. i started doing 10th planet stuff on my own two weeks after i started bjj, and i didn't have any trouble picking most of the stuff up (there are still a few things i don't use because i've never had a one-on-one session with someone too explain the nuances of certain moves, but most of the stuff comes with practice)
