This must be common and I know I must be missing something simple because all of my opponents seem to naturally do it, even new guys who have no idea what I am trying to accomplish
If I lockdown their right leg (so if I were going for old school / electric chair it would be on their left leg)....
As soon as I get the lockdown every person seems to immediately shift their weight to my left side, so my head is already outside of their left armpit, and starts attacking my left arm or reaching back and trying to free their foot, but they still feel like they have a great base, since I haven't yet whipped up which proves difficult from this position I can't reach for foot or leg for old school or electric chair. So I end up flat on my back with the lockdown but not many options in my arsenal, typically I check their left knee and pull full guard by my guard game sucks right now so that doesn't put me in a great position.
I feel like I am missing something easy right in front of me, what is it?

As soon as you get the lockdown, immediately get double under hooks by using jaws of life, followed by whipping up.
I have found that if you still have to think about transitioning from lockdown to whip up, it wont work.
Keep drilling it until it becomes natural. Im sure with time it will get easier for you. Hope this helps.

That was the answer I had in my head - that I was waiting to long to get underhooks thus giving them the oppurtunity to move on top of me, but I was hoping you would give me a magic sweep or something.

Maybe I'm picturing this wrong, but from that position you could try reaching over his neck with your right hand, grabbing an over-under bodylock and taking his back.

Maybe not magic but you could try the BOA?????

We were drilling this today. Getting the lockdown, working the underhooks and exploding up, repeat. Drills for skills, baby!
You need to get that left side underhook, if not both underhooks.
With both underhooks you have a lot of options with the lockdown.
If i only have the left side underhook i get to my side and begin working traditional half guard escapes (i don't keep lockdown)...or i'll work for the right underhook again.
flat = no no.
and keep your head glued to their chest when you whip up to your side or else you'll be fighting off a darce or half assed neck cranks...
oh, and the hand that you use to post up.. don't leave it there. use it and move it back to a gable grip once you are up.
my timing on my whip up still needs massive work but even limping onto your side allows you some options. last night i actually crawled and clawed my way to an electric chair. i would try a whip up... my head gets grabbed... do a cross face or frame my forearm into his throat... regain underhooks, rinse and repeat.. did this for what seemed like forever until i correctly swung the lockdown leg over allowing my to reach his leg for the eletric chair.

sounds to me like the arm triangle is right there for the taking.
check out "Jiu Jitsu Unleashed" and Bravo will explain the technique i'm referring to. (uhhuh, i said reefer.)
i think it's called the Apollo.
there's also a badass leg lock from the lockdown in that book.
