Found out today from my othorpedist that my lateral meniscus is torn in my left knee.
Anyone have experience with this surgery and recovery time? The actual injury happened on January 10th as I was teaching a seminar... I have been taking it easy but training nonetheless... I dread taking too much time off.
Tim
I freind of mine did not have surgery. He rehabed it. He is a 50 year old Karate guy. He is in tremendous shape and Did the rehab religously. His first doctor that wanted to cut on him. He found a 2nd doc that went the rehab route.
I don't know anything. Every case is probably different also.

Tim:
There are half a dozen of my students who have had this surgery done (none of the injuries were jits related strangely enough). Recovery time was 6 weeks with rehab.
One of my students, Tristan, actually had his removed. He posts here from time to time. Actually, I think 007jits (Jason, my other student) also had this done and he posts here quite a bit too.

A torn meniscus does not sound pleasant at all

Is it a full tear or partial? The difference can be several weeks of rehab
I had surgery to repair whats called a 'bucket tear' in mine last year. You should be abl to train within about 6 weeks but it may take longer for teh swelling to completely subside & to get a full range of movement back. I found sitting on the lounge with my leg straight out on the coffee table with a weight hanging over my knee helped with movement quite a bit.
All the best with it.

I tore mine in my right knee back in 02. Haven't been cut yet. The sawbones my family has on retainer says that since i waited a year to even have it checked, that if i can tolerate the occasional discomfort then just keep playing. He did add that eventually it would have to be addressed or it could cause arthritis to develop.
I was joking about the retainer but my kids are pretty rough and my oldest three have all had several mri's, and two have broken bones, so we see him more than we see their pediatric doc. All girls by the way :D
If you do get it repaired, which you should, you'll be off the mat 4-6 weeks depending on the specifics.
After you get back on the mat, you'll be psychologically hobbled for a few more weeks as you protect the joint. Don't get down on your self, in a few months you 'll be at full speed and if you use your rehab time properly, you can actually get back to the mat with better cardio than you had when you went down.
Good luck and keep us posted!~
