I know.... Kill me now.... :D
I have been doing No-Gi for close to a year and a half training three times a week sometimes more if I can find someone to roll with on a saturday or sunday... My purple belt who is a diehard Gracie guy with about 12 years in the game has been VERY helpful and supportive of my jits evolution giving me alot of props when it comes to me getting better. He knows how dedicated I am. Recently he's been introducing me to guys from the Gracie academy like Caio Terra (A gi and no-gi world champion) and actually introduced me as "one of the "up and comers" to this guy.... Made me feel really good... Well even though I'm a DIEHARD 10th planet player and I pull Rubber guard more than I pull ANY type of other guard i decided to pony up and get a Gi and use it occasionally when i'm rolling just to see what it's like.....
However I'm more interested in seeing how effective the Gi pants are at upping my percentages when i'm actively using the RG.... up to now all of my stuff has been sweaty, slippery, fight shorts rubber guard. i'm really stoked to see how the Gi pants could further lock my opponents down....
Anybody got any "before and after" stories about going from fight shorts to gi pants like eddie says will change your game alot????
I'm definitely not looking to go Gi all the time. it will NEVER happen. But I'm open to new things and want to see how many other avenues I can open up in my BJJ training..... hell maybe it will make me better in understanding positioning, etc.... can't see it happening but maybe....

According to Marcelo Garcia, it is important to train with a gi to have the 'finest' technique. He only trains once a week no-gi.
Hahaha get ready to SWEAT!!!
My Gi is soaked by the end of a lesson.
When ya take it off u feel light light LIGHT hehehe.
Get a wet blanket put that on and train.. Feels kinda like that, maybe quite not as bad .
Its a very weird feeling training GI all night and then having a No Gi roll after.
No Gi feels so much lets exhausting and organic, i find that a good way to end the night.
Might not be the same for the guys in cold area's but in the tropics its killer :D
Training gi helps you understand the fundamentals and basics even more.
ALL top no-gi and mma fighters train gi primarily (marcelo, GSP, bj, etc).
While probably not conducive for rubber guard, it changes the game completely and helps you understand the basics of sweeps/passes without relying on strength. I didn't feel like i was relying on strength with no gi, but you don't realize how you take advantage of the sweat and lack of grips.
I trained a year with no gi, then switched and now i do primarily gi and it's really helped my game.
good luck.

when you fight in gi.
thought i'd better put out a balanced agrument on the topic, of which everyone i'm sure has had about 10 zillion discussions over the issue.
it does get bloody hot though, especially when you wear a rash guard underneath to try and stop the gi getting soaked, of which i did to save money on washing.

I have to respectfully disagree here

Please explain how Marcelo trains every day with Gi and once a week no-gi, but steamrolls in no-gi competition? In fact, his gi competitions have had more close calls (however few) than his no-gi fights.

ahhhh. the gi vs nogi thread.
anyone listen to my thoughts on Ari's interview with me?
Gi doesnt make your nogi better!!!
Judo doesnt make your greco better!!!
2 different sports people!!!
Yes, the top players in the game do both!!!
But how many have trained NOGI only???
Its a brazilian dominated organisation!!!
We havent seen nogi only guys until now!!!
Did Jacare submit Cotoure when they grappled at PSL???
Didn't Mac Danzig beat a black belt at PSL???
Mac and Randy are Nogi guys who went against the top guys in the game....just a couple examples.
Lift the wool from your eyes!!!

thanks fellas.... Yeah I try and stay out of the gi vs no-gi argument.... I just want to learn both so that I have a better respect for the traditional martial art side of BJJ.... I still know that I'm going to love No-Gi especially since I'm a diehard 10thPJJ and rubber guard guy....
I'm with brandon on this one that I think they are two entirely different sports....
I do hope that the Gi pants help out my rubber guard tho like Eddie says it will.... I've been having issues with dudes yanking their arms out the SECOND I move to clear their neck... They have been getting used to the fact that if I clear their neck they are in trouble so they're using that as their only opportunity to get out... hopefully the gi-pants will alleviate that....
Speaking of, this is the Gi that I bought... Pretty much the sickest one I could find.

jungle camo Gi from Koral.... outrageously priced but I wanted something that would last and all the guys I train with have Koral's that are like 4 years old and still going strong...
I'm curious.
What are the rules on no gi regarding pants. If you wear pants can take advantage of it? Can they pistol grip your pant legs? or Are people not suppose to use your clothing against you?
Thanks

good question..... I think they can.... I know Denny Prokopos wears gi pants when he rolls no gi... at least all his videos have him wearing 10th PJJ pants....

I like wearing a Gi too because i dont have to have the sweat of 5 or 6 guys all over me at the end of the session.
If it was women I wouldnt mind as much. :)
Mike
Don't feel too bad, the gi is essential anyways. What else are you going to drape the belt on?
:)
j/k i love training both in and out of it

If it's just about the pants, you should try sporting some of these...

Of course I'd be thrown (and they have experience with throwing) out of my Judo dojo for showing up wearing the pants, or the above pictured gi :)

Lol those are badass really, Melee makes 10th planet ones now btw! Speaking of pants, does anyone know if you can get lucky gi pants, just the pants and not the whole gi from somewhere? I need new gi pants but don't need the whole gi.

Im not 100% sure but I think in no gi, if you wear gi pants, it's like wearing shorts and you can't grab them. I guess it would depend on the comp rules?
Thanks. That is what I was told tonight.
I had a no gi private lesson tonight. It is cool stuff. It seems like a much faster game, even though I was going slow just trying to learn techniques.
