I would like to get some input from guys who do no gi. I hear Eddie talking about wearing gi pants to help get some friction but I also see vids of some of his students wearing knee sleeves, others gi pants.

For those who roll no gi, do you prefer gi pants or knee sleeves and why?

Also, what brand of gi pants or knee sleeves do you recommend and why? I'm looking to purchase either a pair of gi pants or knee sleeves.

If I decide to go with knee sleeves I'd really like your input on which ones provide the most comfort, flexibility, and are not bulky.

Otherwise, if I go with gi pants, I am just looking for good quality that will last.

eddie bravo wears both, the gi pants gve u the most amount of overall grip, but he also wears knee sleeves and ankle sleeves, to get the most grip if his pants slide up

I haven't used knee sleeves yet, but I like rolling in pants better than shorts. It gives you more grip and I feel a little more secure knowing there is more protection from from infection. I have two pairs of HCK pants and they are great.

i'll let you know how gi pants go soon since i just bought some and i've been rolling with sprawl shorts and rashguards for the last year and a half..... I've been working the squeeze trying to lock my opponents down but they've been getting their arm out lately when i go to clear the neck.... So I bought a full gi....

There are a few places to buy just gi pants. Koral makes really nice stuff....

There is some Gi Pants from Krugan's that seem really nice too for like 60 bucks and you can buy them seperately....

HCK pants are like 39 shipped from the main site. 60 bucks for a pair of pants, holy cow! You must be a rich Airman. :D

I wear both, depending on laundry day lol... I wear a combo of either Gi pants and ankle sleeves, or shorts and tights underneath. I find the best is gi pants and ankle sleeves really. As for brands, I would say Vulkan and Koral as the top 2, and Melee ankle sleeves and tights :)

What is the point of training no gi if you are going to wear gi pants for extra friction? When we train no gi we always wear shorts and a rashie.

well like eddie says in all his books it's not the gi pants it's the TOP that is the key to being either gi or no gi..... you can't get collar choked with your pant leg..... at least i hope you can't... :D

But in mma (most organisations) you can't wear long pants. He has always promoted his style as being good for mma, I'm suprised that he encourages that the pants even though it's illegal in MMA.

It really is the basics of it though. Training no gi is essentially not using the pants or jacket as weapons or as a defense. Examples would be lapel chokes, or holding the cuffs for spider guard, or even holding the gi pants to pass. In no gi you simply avoid those things, even if the opponent is wearing gi pants, you can still consider it no gi, just don't grab the pants :)
Also, it's training...Pants help prevent and control the spread of staph and ring worm in a dojo/gym. Ya you could wear shorts with tights underneath(like i do sometimes) but you still would take the tights off for a fight am I wrong? Unless you're a Pride fighter who loves his tight yellows haha. I like the advantages of the gi pants but I would say for training purposes they are better health wise. You just gotta hold a little tighter in the cage!

I am a "depends on laundry" vote. I train gi and nogi, so if my pants are clean on nogi days, I wear them. On gi days, we train Muay Thai after, so I drop the kimono and fight in pants and a rashie sometimes. If I had to pick which I prefer?! Shorts and tights, or just shorts. It's lighter and I always feel tights restrict me a little bit, and I need all of my flexibility! I bought a cheap pair of Kagi pants, and they are pretty crappy, honestly. I like my Koral gi, MUCH more comfy. For tights, I really just use underarmor hot weather tights, but if I am happy with my Melee gear (which I'm sure I will be) I may pick up some 10P tights.

I'm just tired of scraping up my knees and decided to get either knee sleeves or gi pants. Didn't know if there was much of a difference in performance when it comes to grappling.

usually just shorts. although i am training for mma, so i do not want to rely on friction for something i can't wear in the ring.
