Competed today at my first BJJ tournament. I went into the No-GI Executive Division (over 35) at 170-185 lbs and because of the amount of competitors they combined the Masters (30-35 years) with us and they also combined the 185-200 lb guys so we had a full bracket. First guy I fought was a big strong wrestler and got the takedown and cranked in a tight Guillotine, I toughed it out and got to his side then mounted then slowly took the armbar despite him taunting me to "go for it". He locked in a good grip but I broke it an got the tap.
2nd match was once again a big strong wrestler and he also got the takedown and was in my hald guard and when I tried to sweep his high posture he cranked on a twisting ankle lock (which was illegal in this division). I had to be carried off the mats and the guy was DQ'd.
At this point I was given the option to take 2nd place or compete for 1st. The guy I was going to go against seemed like a pretty cool guy and I told him I would match up with him if he wouldnt attack my bad leg. Guy was cool and said he would so we went at it. I actually tried for a takedown and I ended up on bottom and we played there for awhile, my messed up ankle was killing me and he passed and caught me in an armbar. Even with a good ankle I doubt if I could have beat him tho they guy is a purple belt and only trains in BJJ. Guy paid me compliments about my control and technique tho.
Lots of fun. I was the oldest no-gi competitor (46) and the guy that beat me was the next oldest (36). The guy that won and I were smallest guy's in the combined division. Something else I wanted to add is that I have also never formally taken BJJ lessons, just gone to seminars and trained with my club members from books and DVD's.
Downside is my ankle has swollen up huge and is sore as hell, hope I can make it to work on Monday.
