View Full Version : 100lbs/45kilos and up?
Hows it going?
Just thought I would ask a simple question, ranging from ground work to stand up JJJ type stuff:
How do you deal with opponents who are 100lbs/45kilos or more heavier than you? Or even 40-50lbs/18-27kilos? Just wondering how you guys avoid or work around them.
I find that if I can stay out of side control I'm fine. What 'bout you?

technique, technique, technique.....
the only 3 things that will even it out for you.... you are not going to outpower them....
so you need to use leverage and momentum and position to get things going in your favor.
The other thing I was going to say is "put on a Gi".... I notice with some of my guys that roll "Gi" all the time is they are handling dudes way bigger than them like wrestlers, etc because of all the handholds... Wrestlers in a Gi is like a fish out of water... :D
ME specifically when rolling against monsters I generally pull guard and work subs off my back. since JJ is sometimes "energy management and conservation" I try to use the minimum amount of power and strength to get my way and rely more on leverage and technique. Try to get your Legs working against their arms... it'll even out the strength disadvantage you will be at...
Not gonna lie here: 100lbs advantage is pretty tough to overcome. Are you rolling with a gi or no-gi? For no-gi the only advice I can give is don't be on the bottom, so do whatever it takes to fight for top position!
As far as JJJ goes strikes to the vitals (nuts, eyes, temples ect) are your friend. Strike hard and strike often!
We do Gi, and we are traditonally JJJ, but we do quite a bit of ground cause its fun!
I agree with the stand-up, just wondering how you guys handle bigger guys...I was thinking I might learn some things from you guys that have worked for you before!

im a feathery weight. stay on top unless you want your ribs to break and face blubber. do takedowns and work their legs, arms or head. don't pull guard, when their that big i dont even like mount. i prefer quarter guard, eclipse, or pulling out some pankration or sambo on their face. eventually you'll notice ways to use their weight against them. when you're both down, keep their hips or shoulders/head off the mat and they're stuck.
i'll often refer back to this post alot too.
:D ok bubs, try these and we'll go from there. you will not be the last to ask this so i thought i would make a collective.
you could call this the sub101 New Hire Orientation binder; fatty(and big guys) defence and technique section
I'd start with this one, straight from Ari.

Unfortunately everyone that is much larger than me is also much better technique wise so sorry I can't give you any advice on that - because the only thing I know is get how to get my arse kicked by the bigger guys lol

The size of your opponent shouldn't be your main concern while rolling. Just do your thing.

Fortunately for me, I haven't ever rolled with someone bigger than me...285 lbs does have certain advantages...
But what the little guys do that works well against me, is constant motion. Even in good shape, I can't move as fast as the little guys, and typically their endurance is better than mine. Unless I make them support my weight..then it's typically over quickly. So continually change up your attacks, keep them guessing, and eventually you should catch them in something if your technique is solid.

i gotta disagree with don't pull guard on a bigger guy even with the Gi on..... if you are fighting for top position with someone huge you're going to waste ALOT of energy.... and for what? To get bucked off????
i say conserve your energy instead of trying to go toe to toe with someone for top position when that person has 100lbs on you.... if he's in your guard and he's "crushing" you with his weight that means he's already broken down his posture for you..... your work is half done... get flexible and start gogoplata'ing everything that moves... :D

Being a big dude, I would let you pull guard all day long. Even if I am broken down, I'm putting all my weight on you, I'm going to wear on you until you can't put up a fight. Then there is the factor that if someone has 100+ pound on you, are you going to have a decent guard at that point? 100+ pounds adds alot of frame for you to get your legs around...
Don't get me wrong, I love 10PJJ....but being on the bottom, is still a worse place to be than on top.
If you find yourself on the bottom try to fight from your side rather than square on your back. It relieves a lot of their weight if you do that.

Trust me Ed, I don't need someone to be bigger than me for me to suck at the jits.....

Never be FLAT on your back, ever.

I'm guessing 70% of the time I'm the bigger guy then I would play with someone bigger than me and I would be doomed because all my advantages would be nullified just by the physical size of my opponent. I think being large makes it hard to learn Jiu Jitsu because you don't all the fine points as much. I learn a lot more rolling with guys who are bigger than me. This is good because we are getting more and more big guys. One of these days I am going to be the runt if it keeps up.

yeah i definitely hear what you're saying dannicus... it could be because most of our bigger guys are all prior wrestlers.... So they feel completely comfortable being on top and sometimes they let their guard down because they feel in no way threatened if they are on top... big mistake on their part. I know they can't sub me if they are in MY guard so i'll play from my back looking for sloppy transitions, sloppiness with their arms, etc.... I just hate scrambling around with wrestlers to take their back cause all they do is "sit out" escapes and I end up getting more tired with zero chance of submission. I know a heavy guy is gonna wear me down by laying his weight on me but hell at least I have a chance of subbing him from there..... the other big huge guy we have in our class is a gracie purple belt with 12 years in the game..... doesn't matter if you're on top or bottom with him, he just kills everyone no matter where we feel like putting him...

I definately agree Dan. I am not small at 200 pounds but we have a guy at our club who is around 265 & to hold a closed guard is virtually impossible for me & Im 6ft. If I try a gogoplata he simply crushes me & passes. Ultimately I will get him but thats purely on experience as I have trained for far longer than him. I always try to stay in side control or north south with the biggest guys & keep them as flat as possible before I get my favourite spinning choke set up from the other side.

Actually, now that I think about it. This may be the better position to be in, if you know how to position your weight properly. If you control their head, one way or the other, it makes it very difficult to turn their body. I know that I find high side control, North/South, etc to be the most difficult for me to escape from. Plus, big guys I think are inherently clausterphobic. We just get real uncomfortable in small confining areas.....
We may be getting somewhere here fellas...and ladies (can't forget the ladies :) )
