Just wondering if any of you guys have experienced this. I have a guy in my class with a wicked closed guard. he's got extremely long legs so most knee in the butt guard passes don't work on him cause it's not putting pressure on his ankles enough for him to uncross em..... Well he absolutely LOVES sitting up and going for cross-side kimura's from the guard. he'll snatch an arm, sit back, shift his hips and it's over.....

well after seeing him do this a few times I got to thinking that if I was sitting up and he sat into me and went for that kimura if I shot my left arm behind his head and then under his armpit and gable gripped with my right hand to lock it in and kept my armpit super tight on the back of his head he'd be in the 100% from his full closed guard.....

well I tried it a few times and he said it was really painful and that he had to open his guard up cause the neck crank was vicious..... anyone ever used this to pass someones guard that likes to sit up and go for kimuras, keylocks, etc????

I haven't tried this..but now i am going to. I roll with a guy exactly like you describe. Long and kimura hungry from the guard. I will be trying this tonight......

maybe Ari can take a look at this technique i'm describing and see what he can come up with pass-wise or submission-wise??? I'm going to mess with it tonight drilling and see what I can come up with... My technique with it was basically slap on the 100% percent as tight as possible, opponent will generally lay back down on his back but his neck will be bent up or sideways at an odd angle due to your hold on it and then I began to walk around my legs to the side opposite my 100%.... If his head was under my left armpit i would walk my legs around to the right until he opened his guard...

It turns into a STOCK neck crank or 3/4 hold crank but I'll have to take this to the mat. Stay tuned!

Wouldn't the can opener be an easier move to go for if you were going to crank the neck anyway?

can opener is easily broken I find.... and if you're flexible enough the can opener can be dealt with depending on pain tolerance... I had a dude do the 100% to me in my closed guard today and it hurt WAY more than a can opener...

You gotta be careful to lock it in under his armpit and gable grip or S grip quick tho... cause without an underhook he could creep around and take your back. But once your hands are locked there is NO taking your back...

this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RtGUiiDD1k) is my bread and butter pass. you'll get your back taken a few times figuring it out, but i've found there's very little the guy can to do prevent this pass once you staple gun that knee to the ground.

All good and well if you can get his guard open to do it.

I use the combat base to open the gaurd, but recently i've been working with the Sao Paulo pass / Chim pass. It's tough, but is very high percentage once you practice it.

yeah pacific that is a nasty pass but this dude's legs are so long he will scoop you into his closed guard and RARELY opens it....

combat base doesn't really work with him cause the knee in his ass doesn't put any pressure on his ankles cuz his legs are so long....

shorter guys the combat base, single arm under pass, double under pass, etc all work... against this guy nothing that requires a knee in the ass seems to work..... (however all the standing passes work normal)...

Oh and Ari as an update to this post I drilled a bit with the 100% and actually I walk my legs around TOWARD the side I have the 100% on.... so if my left arm is looped over his head and under his RIGHT armpit then I sprawl my legs and walk toward my left.... seemingly he HAS to uncross his legs to avoid a wicked neck crank....

Yeah i understand how combat base is tough against and opponent like that.

Use the violator pass then. Stick the knee in his crack, sit back, stand the leg up (the one in his crack), and let his butt slide down your shin. Works great for people w/ longer legs. I suck at it, but shorter people get it off on me all day since it's easier to get the knee in between the legs and sit down to break the guard. Once the knee is passed through the crack, i'm just counting the seconds until my guard is broken.

yeah i had a gracie blue belt doing that knee up pass all day on me..... he would use double armpit control push his hips back to create a little space then jam his knee up thru the small bit of space... at that point it was whenever he wanted to pass he could......

any downsides to that pass? I've done something similar from hip control but armpit control seems easier to grab these days.

maybe.... the large gap might make him suseptible (sp) to a scissor sweep i'd imagine....

Since I have about a year and a half of grappling experience I still associate opening my guard with failure :D

I'll start working more open guard stuff soon so i don't get so "Oh shit my guard is open" reaction....
