Mat burn.

Worse than rug, grass, and razor burn combined IMO.

I always seem to get it almost every class on top of my foot. The burn I got from last class is still kicking.

Just wondering if anybody else gets mat burn, and what they do to prevent/Treat it. I've been getting it almost every class for the last 4 years and its getting to be a bit annoying.

Thanks in advance.

If wrestling shoes are out of the question, then you might try looking into grapple socks. I don't know the exact brand name but they're out there. Also look into Muay Thai ankle braces. They'll protect the majority of the top of your instep while leaving the ball of your foot free for traction.

Best wishes man!

i'll use a real thin athletic tape for my tosies:) , and a tape that looks like a bandaid, to wrap my problem areas with--it doesn't fall off and breathes somewhat. Try to build the hands and feet of a kung fu masta!

I use my Muay Thai ankle braces when I roll, it is A) great support for my weakass ankles. B) a nice bit of traction for my feet. C) a nice bit of protection for my skin. (PLUG) Melee sells some 10th Planet ankle braces I think, though I have never used them. I like my Throwdown ones, and have some plain old Ace brand ankle sleeves that i use from time to time as well.

Wear normal socks is another alternative.

Stop dragging your foot when you shoot. Drill turning it a bit so you're actually on the instep, though don't get mad at me when you now have mat burn on your ankle bone. :)

I agree with Karma.

The only time i get mat burns on my feet is when i'm clawing to get to my knees and i miss the balls of my feet for traction sliding the top of my foot across the mat.

You really shouldn't be getting it so often that it's a constant open sore.

Its not an open sore, believe me. It just keeps coming back once it goes away.

Preventative measures are nice to know....

Could it be the mats? Some mats have a texture like a cheese grater.

I hate getting mat burn but I also always seem to get it. I use A&D ointment to help treat it. It's the stuff guys rub on their new tattoos to prevent infection. I use it on my skin when I get mat burns, or burn myself at work. It doesn't cure it right away, but it prevents them from getting infected since I'm always using on my feet. Hope that helps!

I get it on my feet from shooting in. I'm assuming he is too. The only thing I know to do is put tape or a bandaid on it if it is bad. If its not bad, suck it up!

ah ok, it's probably cuz ur leaning on the foot that's sliding on the ground too much, ur weight should be mostly forward on the front leg until ur back leg brought fully foward

Just came back from this one gym that had judo mats. They were thick and spongy.. all the wrestlers were getting busted toes and nasty mat burns on their feet from shooting on guys.

Ya, we use a judo dojo, so whenever you shoot in or do any type of groundwork you usually get mat burn

I've got a 50 cent piece sized burn on the top of my foot by my big toe knuckle about 2 weeks ago. It's still there... I put ointment, peroxide, witch hazel... nothing helps. Not to mention it's swollen. Not sure what to do except hope it just goes away one day.

Dry it out? Sometimes that helps.

Everyone I've ever talked to who does any sort of shoot training in their art has some form of mat burn scarred onto their big toe knuckle. I have it on both of mine.

I HATE this problem.

I have big gigantic monkey toes that curl up and down.

I must also have the delicate skin of a 4 year old girl.

If I don't tape my toes or wear socks I am guaranteed to take the skin off of the top of my toes and sometimes my feet.

I feel stupid to always have my toes taped or wear socks - but it is either that or constantly have open oozing wounds on my feet. Nothing better than having them hurt all day at work, stick to the socks, then rip the wounds back open when you take your shoes and socks off at the end of the day........and then have them start to heal up just in time to go back to training and rip them off again.

Anyone have any brand names or links to "grappling socks" - I have never heard of such a thing...I just looked at grapplesock.com - I can't do that....sorry.....i would rather just wear regular cotton socks.

I got one on the top of my foot recently working an escape but it was from a cheap gi... thick rugged cotton repeating to shred layer upon layer right above my pinky toe on my right foot

the escape we were doing was from side control getting back to guard using a shrimp, planting the foot on the ground and then hipping out and getting back to guard... it was a basic technique i was instructing some new guys on but i'll be damned if i don't still have that burn on my foot from almost 10 days ago

I've been getting burns lately when I get lazy on my Omoplata pivots. That inch off the ground makes it or breaks it.
