1. A willingness to learn.
2. A good instructor.
If you have those two, the rest will take care of itself.

1. Heart. Without this, you have no drive to train or test your meddle.
2. Technical ability. Drills for skills, baby! No technique makes you a non practicioner.
3. Style. I put this high because once you figure out your style, you start assimilating the techniques into your game more effectively.
4. Stamina. The longer you can go, the more reps you get in, the better you can get.
4.5. Cardio. Late entry, but gassing out is a good way to go out, or get tapped out. Proper breath control can save you from being choked out.
5. Athletic Ability. Talent can get you far, but the other 4 (5) can take you all the way.
6. Quickness. You can negate a lot of strength by simply being fast.
7. Flexibility. It can get you out of trouble, but it can get you into some bad situations as well. But having the extra few inches here or there is crucial.
8. Strength. Great to have, but there are many things that can make up for it.

this is the order i feel my (and most) BJJ(not mma) instructors look for.
1. technical ability--how well you can perform what they teach
2. actively coming to class
3. quickness--effectively and quickly executing moves while rolling
4. athletic ability--being able to use and blend your learnings effectively from classes
5. Building Stamina--keep pusing your game to the next conditioning level.

The others are nice but they're not his/her responsibility, they're yours.
d) strength
g) lineage
h) style
i) other?

1)Other - Understanding of technique. A lot of people know when to do a technique because their instructor taught them that way, actually understand why, and the ins and outs are very important I think.

2)Technical Ability.

3)Heart.

4)Other (again) - A good teacher. Who understands the concept of Teacher Student, or in some cases being a Master Student. Rather than just a Teacher or Master.

That's it nothing else matters, maybe luck that helps too lol

Speaking in terms of just jiu jitsu the order IMO are:

1.technical ability
2.heart (will power)
3.stamina
4.athletic ability
5.quickness
6.strength
7.style
8.lineage
9.Other: you have to love martial arts. Dedication is the key to improving your skills. If you don't absolutely love it you will burn out and quit i.e. not stay motivated to train.

1.Heart-You must have the will and the mental head space to get back up again.
2. Technical Ability/Sort of ties with lineage if your teacher sucks so will you
3.Stamina
4.Strength
5. Athletic Ability
6.quickness

1. other - Commitment, because you need to drill, drill and drill again until your body knows jiu jitsu as well as your mind. :)
2. heart (will power) - see No 1
3. stamina
4. technical ability
5. quickness
6. style
7. athletic ability
8. strength
9. lineage

Oddly enough, I think these traits are all inter connected somehow. With one, usually leads to another.

1) Dedication to training and keeping and OPEN MIND!!!!
2) Technical Ability (style sure helps)
3) the ability to keep your wits about you (breathing!)

Stamina is hugely important because I have seen guys outlast and win better fighters than themselves many times.

Strength can be a bitch to deal with but I've seen more guys whether storms from big guys and then out last them and then win.

Athletic ability is really a bonus too but I don't have it :p

Would anyone change their order for MMA?

Physical conditioning has ranked a lot higher in MMA than Jiu Jitsu, well at least kimono Jiu Jitsu. But that is just me.

1)Heart-You must have the desire and discipline to get good at it.

2)Intelligence- You must be able to think on your feet (Or back), and understand the whens and wheres of how to use the techniques.

3)Lineage- If you have the HEART and INTELLIGENCE, sound instruction from someone who has walked the path you are going to walk, is invaluable.

4)Athletic Ability- I lump strength, stamina, and quickness into this one. As Helio once said, People who are just natuarlly strong/athletic, are born with "Natural Jiu Jitsu".

5)Egocheck- Humilitiy is a quality most people overlook, but one I feel is essential to becoming a good jiu jitsu player.

Again, I don't do the Jits (YET) So I do this for Judo

1) Other - Humility (this helps with attaining the open mind, helps with wanting to learn)
2) Heart - Nobody likes a quitter
3) Technical Ability - Without the technique, it's not the sport, it's just a Rasslin' match
4) Speed - A good Judo throw is not always powerful, but quick and clean
5) Other - Ne Waza (Ground Game) - Without a ground game in Judo, you are likely to get pinned by a wrestler

The others are intertwined within this. Without heart, you won't have the internal stamina to continue.

If I get some solid time in the jits (at least 6 months) I'll post another on that
