Hi guys and girls,
I'm really new to the whole gi game and will be buying one soon. I was looking at Atama, Gameness and Koral as far as brands are concerned. I live in Hawaii and it doesn't get really cold here at all, so heat and comfort are the major deciding factors.
Can anyone recommend me a gi, or maybe what I should be looking for in one? I think I have the sizing down, I'm pretty sure I'm an A1 as I am 5'7" and 130lbs (soaking wet with soda cans in my pockets).
Pricing really isn't an issue, but as someone just starting out I dont really think I need to get a top of the line Mundial type. I also want to stay away from any crazy colors or something that looks like a Nascar suit. I'd like to be respectful to the sport and as a beginner dress like a beginner.
Thanks in advance!
Buy one from your teacher. It will come patched up the way he wants which will be handy when it comes time for school pictures.

I would go with Vulkan!
I think there by far the best Gi's out there rigth now. I have a few of them and would never buy any other brand ( I also have a gameness and atama)

i have a koral..... they are definitely top of the line but they are also super expensive... i bought it because my instructor had one that he had for like 4 years and it was still going strong after WARS on the mats.... so i wanted something that would hold up.....
i bought miine in camo..... sick looking gi....
I'm Gracie Barra and I have a couple of their uniforms. About once or twice a year we get a school picture and the boss wants everyone to wear their GB uniforms so it is good to have at least one. But the uniforms you buy from the school can be pricey and I need 4 uniforms to get through a week. ( Not this week I am not training cause I hurt my back) So I have some old Judo uniforms and an Addias I got wholesale and I am thinking about picking up a Gameness or Fuji or whatever I can get the cheapest at Budovideo. I might even get another Addias from my Karate supplier. Just so I don't have to was uniforms every day.
Yes I would get what your teacher wants for a first uniform so you have at least one for pictures and competitions.
PS - Judo Uniforms can really suck in Jui Jitsu. They provide way too many handles for your opponents.

I love Ouano (top 3 lightest kimono out there), it doesnt make you like like a giant billboard as some of the others do.

Thanks for the insight guys. I'm checking out gireviews.com right now.
Hi, brother. I lived on Maui for ten years, you'll get used to whatever gei you wear. Anyway you look at it, it's going to be hot when the trades aren't blowing. Either get what your school has or put an ad in the local want ads. There's lots of folks who used to train and would part with their old gei for short cash.
Take care, bruh.

I was browsing gireviews.com and found this review...

Isn't this the same company that ripped Ari off on the rash guards?
Not surprisingly there are no reviews of their product.

Don't cheap out on the pants, mine keep ripping at the knees. So, better get a good one to begin with, it saves time and money in the long run.

Some things to keep in mind.. If a Koral has your eye, they also make Vulkan, which happens to be cheaper and lighter. Atama may be one of the best made kimonos, but they are also tons more than the competition. Some kimonos shrink a TON, so pay very close attention to the washing instructions. If you need any tips on making them fit, look us up :p

Seems everyone is interested in the lightweight gi's in here. Personally if it's any lighter than 14 ounces it drives me crazy...

I strongly dislike the lightweight gis. I like mine thick and heavy simply because it makes me sweat a lot more(seems like they keep me "warmer") and because they seem stronger (less rippage.
The only time lightweight gi are good is when you need all the help you can get to make weight. :D

Do the heavier stiffer gi's restrict movement at all? After the suggestions here, gireviews.com and talking to the head of the school, I think I'm probably gonna end up going with a Vulkan to start.
I start my first formal class tomorrow night. I'm gonna be using a loaner gi from the school for the first class. That scares me a little.
If it don't smell it is probably fine. We wash all our loaner gi after every use but our teacher is a VERY clean. Which is a good thing.

Wear a rash guard underneath (might not make a difference in any case, but who knows...)
One thing about those special lightweight gi is they reduced weight by using those rubber collars. It is supposed to be more brutal being choked when wearing those. Corry is the uniform expert. That Ouano of his is really nice stuff.

So after talking a little more with my instructor it looks like I'll be getting an Atama gi. He gets discounts for his students from them and he uses them himself.
Thanks again for all of your help and input. You guys are awesome.

Who do you study under, Relson Gracie?

Andre Derizans runs the school. It does have Relson's name on it though.
Cool. My cousin speaks very highly of Relson Gracie.

What, you don't like the pajama party?
I like heavy gi's too. Mine has to hang dry and then it's stiff like starched denim. It's thickness gives it more grip for training however on some guys the lapel will just cheese grate their cuticles if their not conditioned for it.

Nothing wrong with Atama kimonos, especially if you can get them at a good price.
I have a Gracie Barra, a Gameness Platnium, and an Atama Mundial 7. The Atama is by far my favorite. The pants are super comfortable and strong. I think they are made from woven angel hair, but I'm not sure. The Gracie Barra gi is great too. That may be because it is the first one I ever wore, so I compare all the others to that. The Gameness wasn't for me. It was really really heavy and hot.
I guess the point of all this is you will love the Atama. If you go to Atama's web site you can get 10% off buy using atama10 as the coupon code.

im currently have 1 whole gi and 1 half gi, the whole is from HCk, thick and heavy thing that is made to last, amd the collar makes chokes harder to get, i also have an addidas, or at least half of 1, i have the pants still, but the top was too small, so i got the howard gi, i also have a pair of atama pants, which got ripped up at the knee after a little over a year

People who wear gameness plats or HCK hardly ever get choked due to collar chokes since the lapels are so damn stiff and thick.

So I got my gi today...This is probably a really stupid question, but the loops on the pants go on the outside right?
I'm a little thrown off because theres a tag on the right leg that looks like its washing instructions and the size. Is that supposed to be there? I have no idea how I would tie it if thats supposed to be on the inside...
Loops on the outside facing the front.
I do not use the loops.
If you do use the loops pull the ends of the drawstring tight before running the drawstring through the loops. You can rip the loops off your pants with the drawstring.
Keep the drawstring even. It is a pain to have to re-string your pants.
