I've never actually grappled no gi. Most of my fights never made it to the ground all that much, unless I initiated the take down in which case I ended up on top - ground and pound.
So tonight was my first night at ATT training no Gi. I have trained at ATT once or twice before for stand up and I really didn't like it, just wasn't my style. I got my ass kicked... I really didn't have high expectations, but after two years of grappling I expected to be at least a little bit better than that. I didn't realize how much I depended on the Gi for sweeps, control, submissions, defense, etc... I think we rolled for over 40 minutes straight with no break. Well I actually took one break to throw up... came back out to the mats and Kiko (our instructor) asked me if I had one more in me. Put me up against a pro fighter... who destroyed me, I luckily didn't puke on him. We bowed out, I emptied my stomach one more time. Luckily I had a friend with me to drive me home lol (it's a one hour drive and I was white as casper).
We drilled one sub forever. Kimura from side control. Side control, wrist control, switch the hips, step over the head, sink it. I probably did at least 100 Kimura's tonight on one guy.
I loved it. Can't wait for next week.

On a side note - now I totally understand what Ari was talking about when he mentioned training at Eddie's gym. The explosiveness of the guys. It was the same here, totally unreal. I couldn't keep rubber guard for the life of me. However I did almost pull off a gogo on a blue belt from rubber guard - which would have been sweet.

haha good to hear you dont hate it after all that. My teacher to day talked about how some of the jits experts dont work on every sub but they have the ones that fit their style and have drilled them thousands of times. lets just hope that the kimura is in your book

You make an interesting point which I always try to touch upon: When a nogi guy goes gi or a gi guy goes nogi, they always say the same thing!
"I didn't realize how different it is and how much of a work out it is!"
Different set ups and different muscle groups are being used.
Jiu Jitsu is just so fucking cool ain't it!??!!

The morning after....
My jaw is killing me, they had no problems with grinding their forearm on my face - mat burn on my right knee - and idk what it is (maybe a rash?) but I've got like six red bumps on the back of my right knee that itches like hell - not to mention my chest feels like I was hit with a sledge hammer while I was sleeping.
:D :D :D can't ask for anything better.

awesome stuff bro, continue the nogi journey!
Yeah, I find no gi to be insanely addictive just because of the fast pace. I love gi grappling as well but gi grappling feels like there's more stalling.. and you get hung up on clothing a lot which is the part that I find annoying. I almost sprained my ankle last night because my partner passed my guard and my foot got caught in the slacky crotch of his gi pants.
I had to tap before he reached my upper body. Submission via crotch taint ankle lock.

i actually had a similar thing happen to me. i had butterfly hooks as he tried to pass, his knee got caught in my pants at the ankle while his other knee was holding my other leg down. as he extended over to pass, i couldn't free my leg and basically got electric chaired (similar result at least), while i was on bottom. damn gi!

Turns out what I thought was a rash is actually staph infection... I've never had staph in my life, or anything similar. It sucks, and it's right on the back of my knee so I can barely use my leg. Kind of pissed....

damn bro, that sucks. hope you can treat it and return to the mats quickly. i have never had it personally but needless to say with all the horror stories out there from Randleman and Diego Sanchez, that's no joke. hope you are better soon.

A buddy of mine got staph on his face. While we were at a tourney his lip was busted up from a head crank and his face was pressed and dragged allover the mat.
This gym had a large children's judo clientele so god only knows what was on that mat. Probably more bacteria than a Burger King ball pit.

My original plan was to go to ATT for the no gi on Tuesday nights (hour away, only day I can get down there)... now after this.. idk? Not only did the infection get on my skin but it also got in my blood and made me sick as a dog, left the ER with a 101 temp.
I think I'll just start taking their gi class lol hopefully that will at least give me some more cover than shorts and a T shirt.

Man that sucks about the staph!!!
Oh, man, that's awful about the staff. Take good care of yourself with that. Wishing you well.
