Pretty simple really... if I buy a judo gi, can I use it for BJJ? What about JJJ? I prefer nogi grappling anyways, but I want to get into JJJ eventually and I know I'll need a gi for that. Also, I figure judo is a good place to learn all the collar grabs and stuff like that.
Thanks.

I am pretty sure all of the gis are universal in the grappling arts. I personally like double weave gis so that they won't rip, and they are heavy. It doubles as a weight vest for training.

judo gis usually have bigger cuffs, which will be very annoying when using it for bjj. I would say just get a good bjj gi and use it for everything.
I think Ari uses a Koral for JJJ!

Yeah, this thread could be handy for me to keep an eye on. The place i'm gonna be training only does one night of no-gi a week and several hours of gi,so i'm thinking i'll do both when i can.
I'm just looking forward to getting back to martial arts after too long away from it

I use a Judo gi. Never actually wore a fancy Koral, Keiko or anything like that. The heavier the better :D

All Judo gis can be used for BJJ, not all BJJ kimonos can be used in Judo if I recall correctly, because of the size of the cuffs in BJJ being smaller. That is something to only worry about though if you are planning on entering tourneys and whatnot.

True, there are tourneys that are very sticky about the size of the cuff on your gi if it's a gi tournament. Vulkan and Koral are very good gis and yes most of them are pretty universal for training. The reason people use heavier gi's in JJ is the durability of the double weave. If you're doing something with a ton of throws, or emphasis on grabbing the gi, a karate gi is gonna rip (Fast). Also like what was said, it is heavier so it doubles as a weight vest

Dude, if you live in a hot weather climate area do NOT get a double weave. I have an Atama single and that bitch gets HOT after about 15 minutes of live rolling. I should have listened to Ari and got a Vulkan ultra light summer weave to begin with. That's definitely gonna be my next purchase. A few of the guys at the school I train at have Vulkans and they're soft as hell. Apparently the breathe really well also. They seem pretty durable and the purple who teaches class most of the time swears by Vulkan.

I *love* it when guys wear judo gis to BJJ.
There are all sorts of fun gi chokes you can do so easily with the longer lapels of a judo gi.

Ed always said he felt like the larger cuffs of the judo gi made nice handles for everyone else.
One thing to keep in mind is your size and shape. Alot of kimonos are designed for slimmer people, and some are cut for thicker people. Do some research and find the best kimono for your body type. Try not to worry about brands so much. Decide on weave first, then find the cut thats best for you, then decide on the brand / style.

Judo and BJJ have different regulations on the GI's...as far as JJJ goes, I have no idea...all regulations are usually on competition, not class. If you wanna train BJJ in your jodo gi's then you more than likely wont hear any complaints from your opponents... they probably will be happy to take advantage of all that extra material...lol.

Some what off topic, but I dont want to start a brand new thread...
Anyone have any actual experiance with Keiko Raca? I've been reading that its a much more slim cut, and for a really skinny guy like myself that might be good. From all the reviews I've read they're similar to the Koral or Vulkans in the softness and light weight.
Just when I thought I had my mind made up...

no experience w/ said brand, but i have a Padilla and Sons Gi and it is very slim fitting, (except the shoulders TBH) but in the chest arms, and torso i would compare it to a tshirt
its not very soft but it is light, less than 4 pounds probably.
also this is the single weave and before 1st wash

Padilla and Sons kimonos are outstanding. Raca is good, and they are slim cut. They are sort of like Koral, the big difference is the Raca has the traditional folded collar, and Koral has the vulkanized rubber.
