what makes 10PJJ 1/2 different than other grappling styles? in your opinion of course :)

The fact that I can control the advancement of my opponent 90% of the time regardless of his or her size and manage to recoup or rest while planning my next attack. Also I can't begin to tell you how many people I have caught with the Electric Sweep/Submission.

That's why I think the 10th Planet Half is better then most. Not perfect, but as close to it as I have seen in 25 years of training Judo, and 5 years of training Jiu Jitsu. Also is one of the reasons why I am now a Nibiru Warrior.

I enjoy the systematic structure of the 10thP half guard. It seems overwhelming at first when you look at it as a bunch of moves. But once you start piecing it all together you basically have a half guard that is aggressive and conditionally responsive to what your opponent does.

Oh, and the electric chair is badass.

This is just a rookie observer's opinion, for I've never been exposed to 10thPlanet other than reading Eddie's books and watching vids. And I'm not good at ju-jitsu at all (yet)
But I love anything that works - and that flies in the face of convention. I think 10thPlanet as a whole is fantastic. I think it helps the jitsu/grappling world grow. And it sure is fun to watch!

I think it is different/ better because just like any good jits, it takes a seemingly weaker position and turns it into an offensive one.

I think it is better because of its effeciency in removing space between you and your opponent. With a good stretch of the legs, they will fall right on top of you, clinch, and a guy like me that HATES being on the bottom at all, I find it MUCH easier to get sweeps to top/back from 10P 1/2 guard vs a traditional 1/2 guard... Yeah so, control, elimination of space and sweeps.

I think that the Electric Chair comes very often to those that don't know the system. I have used the Boa several times also. As well as Stoner Control and a couple of the Ankle Locks from there. The Flexibility thing really comes into play with many who aren't interested in studying the Planet System.

Don't really know the Paragon Half, and all the Video's are Private. Have to wait until I can join 10th Planet DFW Online!

one word....

options

thats what the 10th P half gives you.

i love the Homer Simpson and use it everychance i get. Both versions are quite useful.

I use stoner control all of the time, I will get there and chill out for a sec to weigh my options. I'm a big guy so it easy enough for me to control somebody's lower half for that time. Instead of going into the EC sweep, I have found that with my long arms, I can twist my body and reach my outside hand up and grab a shoulder and use that as a control to take the back VERY easily. I use it more than anything from SC, really.

As long as I'm not the first to admit it, I don't know what the Homer Simpson is either... something to make your opponent go "D'oh!"?

the homer simpson is a painfully simple way to escape the mount.

kinda hard to explain but basically you pull quarter guard rotate your hips back flat shoot your arm under the legs to get him sitting on your neck roll your hips back get to your knees and pull your head out and you have his back

other version you do the same thing except he sits on your neck and you just rotate your hips and it rolls him to his back.

but like i said its hard to understand the mechanics of the move without seeing it.

10th p half is better b/c i managed to get the crotch ripper twice this weekend. everyone falls for pulling half from the start and next thing they know, "oh shat, mine balls!".

love dog fight, stoner control is fun as well. i feel 10thPJJ is more offensive, half guard doesn't seem like a stall point or imminent mount.

it also gives you more confidence in other positions. side control no longer seems so intimidating because you are one step away whether it be a jail break or something else, from getting into an offensive situation.

personally speaking, half guard has become a comfort zone now when it comes to being on my back.

What makes it different is that 10th planet 1/2 guard allows you to not only get under your opponent, but off balance and control his leg at the same time. I also like the fact that a lot of people at tournaments still don't know what to do with it.

Paragon sweep is a quarter guard sweep where you bump the person on top in the direction of the leg you have trapped and bear hug the leg you have trapped, at that point you can basically use it as a swivel and swing your body either direction depending on your opponents reaction. Made popular by Jeff Glover. I believe there is some video of the guys at Hollywood and Eddie showing and discusion how well it works from the lockdown if they are attempting to pass into quarter guard, I believe they re-named it the "Homer Simpson."

Just coming up with an answer for one specific position would make me sit here and type reason after reason.

Keep in mind I have no 10th Planet gym close to me, this website and sub101 is my exposure to the system. With that said - 10th planet today is the best JJ (ground) form because of its innovation and continual evolution. Period.

to those that think the Homer is just from 3/4 you are wrong. you can hit it from electric, whipped up to elbow, 93, boa...anything that allows you to get deep when you dive in.

back, side, single, multiple 50/50's, kneebar, ankle lock are all possible from Homer...and thats just some stuff. I am sure Bill, Jeff and Franjina got some other dope stuff from there.

what are the belt ranks of the cats on this thread???

Hey Brandon.

Its not that I thought you could only hit it from there its just that its easier to explain it from the most basic position.

Not a 10th Planet student here, just someone who watches and reads...

But from what I have seen the majority of the 10th Planet half guard system looks no different conceptually than what I see from any of the other BJJ schools I have been to (use of the lockdown non-withstanding).

White under Ryan Hall - I meant to ask you how his seminar was at your place?

Also I purchased Fade to Black and it is nasty - love the shirt as well - thanks!

When you hit that sweep from those positions is the concept still the same... bear hug the leg and use it to come up on either side?

Brandon, I Prefer Dogs! Beyond that, I think I have hit the Homer Simpson once or twice without knowing it. If what I am reading is correct.

Four Stripe White (But in Jiu Jitsu for 5+ years and Judo 25 years) Recently turned down Blue Belt because I want a 10th Planet Rank instead.

Hey Brandon, I know you've had certain "technique weeks" on your Youtube channel lately (i.e. leglocks, D'arces, etc.). Could you please maybe have a week or series of videos of sweeps/submissions off of the Homer Simpson?

To answer your original question, I love how the 10P half guard holds down most opponents who are unfamiliar with Lockdown passes and gives you a number of sweeps and submissions. I have a friend who moved last year, and the other day we were talking on Facebook about Half Guard. I asked him what method he used, and he said he'd been working with a traditional figure-four lock and then trying to duck under the arm for back control. According to him, this worked maybe 10% of the time. I then talked to him about the Lockdown, and told him that my Half-guard is successful 60% of the time against my training partner who is 50 pounds heavier then I am.

And finally, I'm a white belt whose been doing Jiujitsu for about 6 months. I'm on the wrestling team, and one of my 4 coaches (who weighs 180, while I weigh only 130) is a Blue under Royce Gracie. I also have another coach who is a Purple I think.

EDIT: Oh and one last thing. One day during wrestling practice, one of my partners had one of his legs inbetween mine while pinning me, and I managed to do some sort of Whip-up variation to dogfight where I DPO'd and reversed him. Quite useful!

now isn't that a sick transition from Homer? Some people on other forums are hating on the 50/50 but hey I get it from Ryan Hall. He was at my gym and we trained this. Ill take his advice over schmucks on the net any day:)

Jeff "The Snowman" Monson using The Old School Sweep from 1/2 Guard without the Lockdown.

I think a valid reason for why the 10th Planet 1/2 Guard is better then most.
