So I've been doing jiu jitsu for a month, and I've noticed that when rolling with people of my skill level, I can get their back, put in the hooks... and then they flop around like a large mouth bass and it makes it somewhat uncomfortable for me. If I try to stretch them out I just wind up crushing my own junk.

Gi or no gi? No gi, try to go for a seat belt grip and work on a RNC, armbar, ect. Gi, you can do the same as previously stated, or you can also go for collar chokes. First and far most, you want to gain control and not lose such a dominant position.

Then maybe you shouldn't stretch them out?

I usually wrap up an anaconda body lock while going for the RNC anyways.

My legs are too short for that :(

I've found that sometimes an anaconda lock can limit my movement, so it's not always better. For example, I was on my friend's back a while ago with the anaconda lock and he rolled onto his side and had my leg pinned under him, started attacking the wrist. If I had just had hooks, I would have still had the freedom to manipulate my position to take advantage of the situation, but instead all I could do was hang on and keep slowly battling for better position, which, of course, I was able to get by that point.

Just something else to throw in there. Sometimes the added security is best, but other times you may be better off retaining ability to move, as it can help maintain position, which if more important. If they can never get you off their back, it's only a matter of time before getting choked out - they can defend over and over, but only have to lose the battle once.

I remember seeing a vid of Eddie talking about the body lock. The trick is to switch legs or go back to hooks when your opponent starts to roll. To the OP, if they are moving around that much, be sure to hold them TIGHT. Underhook with wrist control, seatbelt control, anything to keep them from moving, then start setting up your subs. Good luck and keep rolling!

It depends.... ( I always say that but it does always depend)

Sometimes patience is a virtue. Whenever you get get a dominate sometimes you just try to hold it and not do anything until your prey gets done spazzing out. When settles down then start choking him out. I finf this especially true in side control. Guys will fight like Hell when you get side control. I just try to put 100+ Kilos on their chest and give them the wet blanket treatment until they stop fighting. I rest. They wear themselves out. The best way to increase your endurance is to reduce your need for it. :)

With gi I like a collar choke ( kata ha jime) to arm bar combo but it is a little riskier as far as him escaping. I am usually conservative and just go with combination chokes. When you go for RNC or any collar choke let him defend. When he pull the choking arm away slip the other arm through and choking him with that one. My favorite follow-up choke is the 'reverse' ezquiel from the back. But I don't know any fancy stuff.

You're not supposed to just leave it in. You switch legs depending on which side they are rolling to and if they post their feet down and arch back into you, you go back to the hooks.

It's all a very dynamic thing...

I reccomend drilling it. Have your partner alternately buck and roll to either side while you switch sides on your anaconda. Then when you think you have it, have him randomly roll to either side.

Usually i ride them with anacondas forcing them to post their legs and arch back (since it relieves the pressure of the body lock). From that spot I then try to get one of their hands down so I can trap it with my leg... then i have 2 hands against their 1 hand for the RNC.

I find when I get the hooks in and try to get an over/under grip and squeeze like hell. They are always going to buck around like crazy trying to escape. Keep control and let them wear themselves out a bit, then start working the RNC.

I'm not anywhere as experienced in jits as you guys are, but one thing I do know - if I get the back, I ain't giving it up none too easy. In fact, kind of sucking at jits has one advantage, you keep the back like your life depends on it. :)

Yeah I don't like the lose the back either. It isn't like the mount. I will ditch the mount all the time because I have a good mount pass from side control and if I retake mount it is another 4 points!

The back is too hard for me to retake.

If you're using a gi, Bow and Arrow! Its a really high percentage, especially against guys who watch a lot of MMA and are always trying to defend the mata leao.

Second that. Bow and Arrow is freakin' brutal, and relatively easy to get since you only need one hand in their collar, then you're ripping their head off. I even don't mind getting caught in it, cause it's so cool. haha
