I understand that the little tie things can get ripped off, but shouldn't they be CRAZY high quality by now, so that you can tie them and they don't fall off?

I have never seen a Gi match where they were tied, they always are falling of and everything...

There are actually many different chokes using your gi that would be impossible if you could not untuck it and keep it loose so I would imagine that is why nothing has ever advanced in the tie department for grappling gis.

The first thing I do in a gi grappling match(before I even engage) is to pull my gi lose (lol, I keep the belt tied though, just pull the gi up and loose a bit, but if it comes off during the match, use what you got).

Yep. A loose Gi that is all over the place is actually much to your advantage than it staying tied and neat to your body. You can use it to choke them like said above, and it can also get in their way quite a bit.

If your gi is loose they can use it for gi wraps from guard etc. You're damned if you do and your damned if you don't.

I think what Kyle is taking about is those "ties" that are found on the inside of some martial art gis. Those "ties" are usually found on light weight Traditional Martial Art Kimonos (or uniforms) such as :Karate, Ninjutsu, TKD, Hapkido.

The ties are usually there on these uniforms to keep them closed during kicks, puches and kata. They aren't found on heavier unforms (jiu jitsu, judo or aikido) because these arts are...excuse the term, more vigorous (any grappling type art is).

I've had LOTS of guys come in and train with me wearing their karate gis. I have yet to see one of those little ties stay tied up (they usually get ripped off in about 10 minutes). I actually recall grappling once and tearing the guys whole arm sleeve off in a roll. It was pretty funny and we had a good laugh about it.

We don't tie those things in Karate either cause they gripped off immediately in a style like Goju Ryu. In styles where they punch and kick all day they could be alright but not in our dojo.

Judogi, and Jiu Jitsu gi do not have the ties.

The funniest gi tricks I have seen always came from Wallid Ismail. He used cross his lapels backwards sometime to screw with the opponent's grip handles. I hate to do that cause it means you are dead. When you die and are laid to rest the Kimono is crossed backwards.

He also had some ridiculously thick custom lapels also.

Zombie Jitsu?

In the day Wallid was THE MAN.

Every time I get a new gi the ties rip off in the first class. Patches are next to impossible to keep on for me as well... or maybe I just sew like someone with turrets.

Never saw a jits gei with ties.
As for karate geis, I only wear the heaviest weight I can find.
In the eighties we had them custom made from sail cloth. They'd cut the hell out of your skin for a year but they last, sometimes for decades. Still have pants from one, and top from another that were made in 85.
We'd immediately take heavy canvas strips to replace the ties and use yards of thread and reinforce/sew them until our hands were sore.
They don't rip, ever. But when you fight with Goju guys like CEB, you get your ASS ripped instead of your gei ties.
At least when you die, you're still in uniform.

Ed, I am wondering as to why you think Wallid was so good?

*Disclaimer* I do not think he was bad or anything, but he is a "love him or hate him" kinda guy, so I wanna hear why :D :D

Excuse my ignorance, but apparently I have no idea as to what little tie we are talking about? Can someone find a picture for me and post it so that I can learn (I looked at a couple of gi pictures online and I can't really see a tie anywhere.... kindly help(!) ).

It's like a bath robe. The bottom end of the left lapel will have a string on it and there will be a string on the opposite side of the gi inside near the hip. You tie them to each other so that the gi stays in position even if the belt falls off.

i wasn't aware that they were not even on heavier gi's!

my demo uniform still has them, but by other 2 have had them ripped off...

it just seems weird to me to wear the gi with the belt over it, if 90% of the time you have it pulled out and loose.

Hmm, interesting. I am sure it serves a purpose in some martial arts to keep the gi closed at all times. Thanks.

I really don't know what to tell you about that ....
