Alrighty, so, saturday is a seminar, and I have been given a small time slot to show some of the grappling things I have learned.
My goal is to explain very carefully that I am NOT certified to teach this stuff, and am just a casual student of it. I plan to show some of Eddie's half guard game, as per the book. I have all three of his books, and am going to show some of the positions/ideas presented in his book, as they are worded in the book. Some of the people at the seminar are going to have upwards of 10, 20, 30+ years grappling, and in other grappling arts. My level of skill in no gi is about that of a 4 year high school wrestler, with 6 months of no gi in their head, roughly, :D , so I don't expect to teach them anything other than to show the ideas and techniques in the books, and as I personally have seen them/use them.
I understand that I am not an instructor, but I use them in class, and was asked to show some of the stuff. I have explained that I am not by any means a master, but am willing to show what little I do know. I am not at any point claiming anything more than what I am, and just hope to open their eyes to the system a little bit.
Pretty much just short of opening the book and reading it to them, is all I am going to do...
Anyway...
Any advice?
I plan to show the lockdown - oldschool and lockdown - plan b
then the stomps, electric chair sweep, etc... Just show the position, the lockdown, the underhooks, what to do with them. I am not going to go into too much detail, because I am not that good at it, but I can read a book, :p
So, again, any advice form you guys would be very helpful.
Thank you for your time.
:D
You wrestled in high school for 4 years? I didn't take you for a jock.

Oy vey. The one thing I have seen over and over again is people trying to teach the 10th Planet OUT OF THE BOOKS and missing the finer points you only get training with one of the actual 10thPlanet guys.
If you don't want to go into too much detail and especially because you "are not GOOD at it", why the hell do it?
You'd have a better time teaching wrestling (since you did that for 4 years) and you have HANDS on experience with it.
Just a thought.

Like Ari said....
just teach things you are really familiar with
Trust me, the book and the actual teaching ARE very different, I wouldn't really teach it if I wasnt that good at it. People ask me to teach them techniques that I use to good effect against all people, not ones that I suck at!

I said I had the skill of a 4 year high school wrestler, by my school doesn't have a team, :D . Our gym teacher is a national hall of famer in high school wrestling, with a record of like 130-4 or something stupid like that, and I played with him after school almost every day. Hence the "roughly".:p
Well, my instructor asked me to show some of the stuff from the books, and I know that I am not quaified to teach it, the only experience I have with it, is where I train, all of the top level guys there use oldschool/planB from halfguard, ALL the time. I was asked to show it, and I am planning on bringing the books and just showing them...
Again, I am not claming and knowledge/experience, I am just going to show the books, demonstrate some of the techiques in person, as the guys where I train have shown me some of the ways they get them to work, and that will be it, :p

Is this a seminar where people actually pay money to learn something?
I didn't think you wrestled high school. No offense but you just don't look physically hard enough to have endured to training.
Seriously, I would put money down that you are either 1) over estimating your skills or 2) don't realize what a 4 year high school wrestler is.
Around here high school wrestling is no joke. They training a lot harder than your dojo probably does. I base that asumption on your physical appearance. High school wrestlers train harder than probably AT LEAST 95% of dojo in the US. My son's school practices Monday thru Saturday unless there is a event on Saturday. They practice open gym sessions in the summer. They are in the weight room year around. There is no off season unless you play football. Football is like a vacation. Guys not playing football do freestyle and Greco in the summer.
As an experiment I would like to see you roll with my 15 year old who has only one year of high school Wrestling. He doesn't do any Jiu Jitsu. Had a little bit of Judo when he was little. He gives me all I can handle these days.
If you enter a NAGA tournament and have High School Wrestling experience the rules bar you from entering no gi novice division. You have to enter at least an intermediate divison.

Nope, it is free.
We have a BIG seminar every year, for free, this one is saturday from 10-3, 4 different instructors. The night before, to save hotel costs for traveling people, we are all sleeping out in the dojo. At that sleep over, is when I will be doing this..
Ed: In a submission match, I can hold my own against a 4 year wrestler, I cannot beat them at a wrestling match, but I can hold them back enough to submit them as much as they can submit me, that is all, :D

I am going to politely refrain from offering any advice other than don't do it.

Agreed 100%. I own the books like everyone else and wouldn't even think about showing technique to anyone.
In all honesty Kyle, I think you need to mind your manners and politely bow out of this one. My opinion only, but I suspect a few more feel the same way...
You are probably going to do what you want to do anyways but in all actuality you'd be better off demonstrating things that will be reinforced by the drills performed in class since for most people it will be in one ear out the other.
After inquiry I've probably showed everybody at my gym my lockdown game at one time or another but still nobody uses it since it is off the beaten path of our curriculum.
If anything the only useful advice you could give them is how to stuff your lockdown game and mess up what you do.
I would say, go train with a actual 10th Planet school for a bit, the stuff you learn there is different (more technical) than the book, and get a feel what its like to actually do the techniques.
I thought I was 'ok' at 10thPJJ til I went to Hamburg and got smashed in the nogi classes. Made me remember why I like the gi :D. But anyways, I would recommend going to train with Eddie for a while, or whoever is nearby...THEN, do a seminar and throw some 10thPJJ in there.
Thats what I would do, anyway.

Things like this^ are what I expected to hear, :D
I was talking to my instructor about it, and he understand completely. I will bring my books to show them, but I won't show any of the techniques, :D
Thanks for the advice!

Good choice on just bringing the book and showing them. It's one thing to be in class and show your buddies a sick move you saw on youtube, it's a whole different thing to show stuff at a seminar. If it were a bunch of newbs and you were showing very basics, bump and roll, guard pass, basic arm bar etc... but delving into Eddie's stuff with people that have some experience at JJ is not the best idea unless you're a high rank.
Sometimes it's just best to keep our knowledge to ourselves, because it's not always as much as we think it is lol

For great justice, I believe.
Unfortunatly, you would have had more success taking off every zig.

Hey Tony Kovalov. You still or Hollywood BJJ now? Hollywood BJJ was a great place by the way. I got to spend a day there with Charles this summer. The guys were all super welcoming and nice.
Yes...I've made this mistake in past...I speak from experience. I was well aware of it when I posted this too (it didn't escape me:rolleyes:). The only seminiars I've done have been 10thP and JJJ(self defense). I've never tackled a BJJ (nor would I). This thread was some feedback on Tagg's original question.
For me, I offer some things that are good in people's eyes and other stuff that isn't. We have the power of choice and we've gone over this 'stuff' so much already. Entertaining it here just isn't conducive to be honest. As Andreh has pointed out, I have sought out a guy who can really help my gi game out (Keith Owen). I also like to think I've buried the hatchet with AA. We had, to quote the Last Samurai, "a good conversation". The point-I've moved on and continue to focus on positive things.
Train well bro.
Respect

Ari I am very glad that you can admit to your past mistakes. I didn't know you were like that.
Sorry to come off rude, but you gotta admit that it was funny what you were saying to the guy. Im sure you know your reputation.
Also I'm really glad that you put on the white belt and now earned the blue. You are well on your way to repairing your reputation in the bjj community imo.
