Hey guys,

Quick question. What the the main differences between machado jiu jitsu, gracie jiu jitsu and brazillian jiu jitsu? From what I hear they are similar with small changes here and there. What are the main differences between them?

Thanks in advance.

machado's and gracies are cousins and I am under the impression that their version is just an easier version of brazilian jiu-jitsu. I think Helio couldn't do BJJ because he wasn't strong enough to do them so he found an easier way that depended more on leverage instead of strength. I think Machado and Gracie are the same thing.

BJJ is a much more physical strength dependent sport, Gracie jiu jitsu to me is an art... (Muchado is in between the 2) so here's what i have seen

BJJ:Body type-strong, explosive, physical, and ability to throw people around on sweeps using more strength than momentum and technique

GJJ:Body type-ANY, in sweeps and techniques it's more like a judo of the ground, based on using opponents momentum and less body strength with more technique to get the sweep

In BJJ the techniques from getting some one into a lock depend on your strength and less technique to just pry threw the defense and finish your opponent (EX:arm bar, the opponent locks both arms to defend, and instead of using a technique to break your opponents defense you use your physical strength to pry there hands open and yank the arm down into the arm bar)

In GJJ if you are going to use a technique most likely you don't use one technique, but you bait one and transition to the other and in times when a technique is trying to be defended against there are techniques to break the defense and then use the original technique (EX:arm bar, the opponent locks both arms to defend, and instead of prying there hands apart you can use one of many techniques to break the defense and go back to the arm bar successfully)

for every one who disagrees, there is things that are wrong ^^up there... but i have only trained in GJJ and all of my statements are to the most extreme extent but...

there are unique people in GJJ who rely on strength (Rickson Gracie is pretty physical and has excellent technique) and i'm sure there are BJJ people who have amazing technique and low physical strength...

but i was just saying the stereo type because originally GJJ was made for a little weak man who couldn't do BJJ because he lacked physical strength (Helio Gracie) so i was trying to point out that BJJ is generally a little more reliant on strength, and GJJ is generally based on more leverage and technique...

but in reality all 3 types you named have little to no difference, because the technique varies from person to person no matter what there trainer teaches them

there was no bjj b4 helio gracie, he took what was taught to him by maeda aka count koma and modified it to fit his smaller frame and lack of strength. after that it became gracie jiu-jitsu, and from there they taught others who added their own views to the techniques and kind of created their own "style" that was based on what the gracies taught.
This branching off led to a generalization of calling it brazilian jiu-jitsu since it originiated from brazil. there isnt rlly a difference from 1 style to another except maybe 1 person mite focuz more on incorporating throws into their jiu-jitsu like dave camarillo for example, but essentially hes still teaching the same stuff as the gracies, just slightly modified.
And as far as strength and such, well when helio was fighting there was no time limit, so he could pull guard and sit and wait for his opponent to mess up, and the fights could take several hours, but today time limits have been added and point scoring, so if u dont hunt for submissions or positions then u will lose

BJJ & GJJ are one in the same. Was there BJJ before Helio? No, there was Japanese Jiu Jitsu. Helio didn't come to be involved into Jiu Jitsu until that one faithful day his brother ran late to give a class. Gracie Jiu Jitsu came to be known through Rorion in the first UFC.
