We have a coach come to our school and teach us submission wrestling, not BJJ.
After rolling and learning from some BJJ schools for a little while now, it is obvious to me that the styles are very different, in principle.
Does anyone here train in both? or has trained in both?
I find that I like the submission wrestling stuff better, but against a BJJ styled person, some of the techniques need to be modified.
Example: Cross mount as opposed to side control.
-Submission Wrestling: You don't worry as much about them getting to guard, because that is not a better position in SW, it is about equal.
-BJJ: You WANT to get to guard, because that is a step up for you.
He is a student of mark hatmaker, and some of the things he shows us, are insanely simple, yet crazily effective. But things like the cross mount, I find that people can get back to guard very easily, in comparison to a more BJJ style side control.
What do you guys think, am I just crazy? :D

I've dabbled in SW, I've watched a lot of it at the Miletich gym. In my opinion BJJ is a step above. But we all have different philosophies, what I see fits doesn't mean everyone else see's it as well.
Good point, I guess it's value is relative to how people can connect and relate it to what they know.

Submission wrestling and BJJ are the same unless the rules of submission wrestling are specified as different.
As long as side control/mount and back control are considered good positions in that order, than it is the same.
"Catch wrestling" would be different. In catch, the guard counts as a pin, so that's no good. That would change everything.

There's a reason that both catch and sambo treat the guard that way. ;)
And I think Mark Hatmaker is awesome. Hence the quote.

Is it the same reason why they call the guard the "whore hold"?

Cant speak for others but the reason we call the grappling that we do at our school submission wrestling is because none of us train in a Gi and none of us have any rank in BJJ.

From my experience submission wrestling emphasizes top game more. Also you will find most teachers have a wrestling background which is usually accompanied with better take downs but also a different mindset.
Im a big fan of the humbling Jiu Jitsu mindset. Not about strength or scrambling; at its core its about self defense. Its about being the smaller/weaker guy and getting PUT on your back. Also the guard is one of the most beautiful positions in BJJ. I used to be scared to start in it and now I welcome it.
I will say Im a bit confused hearing all this stuff about the guard in SW...Ive actually never heard that.

we have submission wrestling coaches down at the tora judo academy, and other instructors, so we are exposed to a large spectrum of styles, each with a different grappling point of view. i've observed that the SW prefers the topg game of the guard, as opposed to bjj welcoming the bottom game. in my opinion, i'd like to put both styles under my belt, but that wouldnt answer your question. to answer your question, i'd have to ask you a question. when you say bootm guard, do you mean the bottom of full guard,or any guard?I.E. the bottom of side control.
if you mean the bottom of any guard, then i'd prefer the bjj perspective.
but if you mean bottom guard as in the bottom of full guard, then i'd gladly take the SW. this is mainly because my bottom full guard game is only half-decent(haha).
of course, this is assuming that you arent out in the streets, having to protect yourself. that is completely different:)
