Ari, would you be able to show more moves that could be done from the scarf hold, because I find myself in the position a lot, and usually I just transition from there to mount or so, but the only move I really know is the key lock you showed. Just the other day I saw someone do a choke, and all I saw from where I was, was just they grabbed their hand and brought it down across their neck I think, so I'm guessing it was something like an arm triangle.

Also, could you show more ways to keep someone down in side mount? When they try to push me off, I immediately move up towards their head, and when they try to roll I immediately move back, but other than that I really don't know what else I could do from there.

In closed guard, I usually just go for the kimura or arm triangle, armbar from guard is a little too hard for me, as is triangle. Any suggestions Ari?

when your in some ones guard you can attack with a heel hook witch ari has a video of, or you can do a calf slicer/shin lock... witch is done by locking 1 leg like you are going for a heel hook, but instead of twisting and attacking the knee/ankle tuck the toes underneath the armpit and arch and pull and it puts a lot of strain on the calf and can snap the shin bone

another good move i don't think ari has, he may and i might have missed it is the americana key lock.. it is like the kimura from side controls cousin as my buddy calls it... and it is also referred to as the paintbrush keylock by some people but if you look it up on youtube there are many tutorials like aris but the technique is simple and very painful and great from mount but if you have long arms and stack a little bit it will be effective from guard

Americana from inside someones guard is actually featured on Ari's video of mistakes made by beginners from memory. Better off trying to pass the guard for better position before looking for the submission.

see yeah i know it commonly does not work... but as much as i've worked out of the guard i barley need to stack at all and i can still get a good americana off, granted i am very tall/lanky for a 155

Hey Andy:

The choke you are describing sounds like an Ezekiel (hell or scissors) Choke from Scarf hold. There are quite a few submissions from this position but what I do with my guys is this:

(And this goes for side mount as well). I have them drill 30 seconds back and forward for 5 minutes to HOLD the side mount and scarf position. I want my guys to be able to hold you down to mat and defend against reversals from these positions. My 160 pounders feel like 220 pounds (hence the reason some schools call it the 100 kilo position. Get heavy.

Before I work submissions with them, I have them get the feeling of holding that position with the partner increasing the resistance over the 5 minutes. We do this almost every class.

The closed guard: If you want to create ways to submit a guy from here, the most important thing is to have an ACTIVE guard. Your hips and the movement you create is SOOOOO important. You ain't gonna get anything just holding a guy. Rubber guard is another option. When I roll, I tend to shift my hips out a lot, to create space, and get my partner worried about sweeps or submissions.

Hope that helps. Next week I will tackle a lot of questions and requests that have been pilling up in my in box!

cheers
Ari
