Sometimes I get caught in what your video mentioned as someone 'chaining their attacks' and I was wondering what I could do to counter that and go from defense to offense. When I'm sparring, I usually get paired with this guy who's a lot stronger than me. His favorite moves are usually the Kimura or the Americana, and I constantly find myself just trying to pry my arm free while he keeps going for it. Any suggestions Ari?

Andy my friend....

You've hit the nail right on the head with your question. A question asked a thousand times over by students EVERY WHERE.

You said you usually get paired with a guy who is a lot stronger than you. Are your skills about the same level? If so, his power moves, like the kimura or americana (I call them power moves because it uses more upper strength than many other moves) are tough to survive.

I usually tuck the hands in REALLY tight. If it isn't working, I turtle and work my hook/RNC defense. If you are consistantly getting caught in the key locks, try to turtle and work a back defense.

While most instructors say " never give your back up", there are times when it makes more sense to do so, thus giving you the chance to turn into his guard or get side mount on him.

Or..come on up to my gym for a seminar and we'll get you ready!

peace!
