alright
I about got into it with someone on a forum who insisted there was no danger of getting submitted when someone was in your Guard
and my thinking is Guard is very good Defensivly and you can go on Offence with it, but your not 100% safe (in strict subhunting, I don't think anyone argues your safe with them in your Guard during Mixed)
but I was telling this guy options from someones Guard and he kept insisting only a scrub would get tapped by it
to me that is an ignorant theory but he lives too far away for me to show him so I'm just wondering on this one point, about going for a leg/ankle while in thier guard
he said that it wasn't truely guard cus you'd have to open thier feet to do it, and I'm thinking well that's called open Guard so it is a Guard! but it really bothered me and I'm just wondering if I had a solid point or if I got too heated

don't worry about my feelings if I'm wrong let me have it!

Rob:

You're both right to some degree.

Options for submissions while IN SOMEONE'S GUARD (closed) is limited. Can openner, a couple of wrist locks, some leg locks and if you are STRONG enough, a key lock are about all you'll get. A good JJ player can stuff all of those.

It's always better to work to get out of it because the other guy has more options for submissions than you do. Position before submission.

There are a couple of moves that are REALLY dangerous than you can use from that position that most people don't teach (they are illegal in comps) because they can, with a very real possibility, break the back or neck. It requires you to stack, turn and step over the back. If the person doesn't let go....well..seach you tube and you might find the video of a guy who get's his back broken with this move.

Food for thought.

I've seen that video, and I hope that guy took a long walk off a short pier to put it lightly.
Also I don't think there is any position where you are completely invulnerable, but if you have a good guard(open/closed) then you definetely have the advantage.

There are also a couple of gi chokes you can go for, while in someones guard. I usually go for the thrust choke. It only taps noobs, but it can distract them while I go for a pass. Kinda like the can opener in that regard.
