View Full Version : My first tourney experience

I drove down to Boise, which is just shy of five hours from where I live, to compete in the Northwest Submission Grappling Challenge. In this tournament, there were no time limits, no points, submissions only.
Looking at the weight classes, I decided that I needed to cut to be under 220. I got to Boise on Friday, Oct 1st, the day before the tournament. When I weighed myself before I left, I weighed in at 220 on the dot. Fearing that my scale could have a variance, I continued to eat like a supermodel the rest of the day. I couldn't get to sleep until 2:30 am, and had to be there to weigh in at 7 am. Needless to say, I felt weak and dizzy.
The tournament started at 10 am. Tren Long approached me, for we had talked at weigh ins, and informed me that there weren't enough people in my weight class, so they had to combine some divisions, meaning lightheavies and heavies. Sweet. All that cutting for nothing. Oh well. I still had my mind on business. :)
I am still in the midst of tracking down more videos of my matches , but for now, here is the semifinal nogi match of mine from yesterday. The guy I fought was also light heavy. I felt like I controlled the match from start to finish, and I also feel he should have tapped a little sooner.;) You can see in the background Scott "the ref" Marker was there reffing my match, and you can also see Keith Owen coaching me, in the gray shirt and khaki shorts. Make sure to watch it in full screen or else it looks too far away.

I ended up taking 2nd place in my nogi division, and then suffered an injury (pulled/cracked rib) and had to pull out of the gi tourney.
The class that was displayed throughout the tournament was amazing, and everyone hugged and shook hands throughout.
I will post my other matches as they come out. Special thanks to Ari and all you guys/gals for the support over the years. It felt good to rep Sub101 on my rash guard and win!!!:)

That looked like funnnnn. Sounds like a good tourney experience!
You just controlled that guy like it was nothing. Good stuff. He was BEGGING for a shot though. I was thinking while I watched it "DOUBLE LEG! DOUBLE! DOITDOITDOIT!"

Preston, I loved watching that match. And yeah, that odd pawing technique was pretty cool to watch as well. And I gotta say, thats probably one of the best first-tourney experience I've seen. :D
Congrats dude. Now, if I could just watch the video.

Good guard work, big fella! You put your long legs to good work. That's a real advantage at heavyweight. Most of the guys that are that heavy are thick and can't use rubber guard or even triangles. Good work!

You had some good sweeps in this one, and both the kimura and triangle looked close. That guy was a brute tho, looked like he was as thick as Jeff Monson. I think you were the more technical fighter.
In the first video you posted, did you bait him with the double at the end, or he just fell into the triangle to arm bar finish?

I totally baited him. Good observation. My guard is my strongest asset, and I knew I could win from there.
I could not BELIEVE that in the second match I couldn't tap him. He was really strong, and did everything right as far as posture goes, to get out of my sub attempts..

I was at the Sub Challenge from 9:30am to about 4pm (left shortly after Matt Owen schooled Ricky).
I was pretty impressed with your work there. I know that I got a video of one of your matches, just dont remember which one. I'll check when I get home from work.
If they end up having to combine divisions in April, it could be you and I butting heads at that one :) I'm 6'4" and currently walking at about 270lb, should be a better conditioned 240-250 by April.

You're welcome, sir.
By the way, how's the injury? I saw that you gimped off of the mat, but didn't know exactly what happened or how severe at the time. Rib gonna be OK?

I think I will be fine. Weird injury. I started the match in a tie up and just felt a weird pressure in my rib, and didn't think too much of it. Then we hit the mat, and within just a few seconds, the pain was EXTREME. I tapped because of it. It felt/feels like I have a knife stuck in my ribs.
I think I will be good in a couple of weeks. Thanks for asking bro.
